Samsung Unveils ATIV Q Android & Win8 Convertible Tablet, Galaxy NX DSLR Camera Running Android 4.2

Samsung Premiere 2013 took place yesterday in London, and the company announced 9 new products at the event. But 2 devices really stood out for me:

  • ATIV Q – A 13.3″ tablet convertible to a notebook that runs Windows 8 and Android 4.2.2 simultaneously.
  • Galaxy NX – a DSLR Camera running Android 4.2.2 supporting interchangeable lenses.

Galaxy S4 Active was also interesting as it’s compliant with IP67, which means it’s dust proof and water resistant, so you don’t have to worry about dust / sand getting into the device, or dropping it into the water. It can stay under in 1 meter of water for 30 minutes, and even though the touchscreen won’t operate under water, you can still take underwater pictures during your snorkeling trip. Don’t expect it to work for diving though.

The device can be used as a tablet, but you can slide the screen to show a keyboard, and convert it into a notebook. Five working positions is possible. ATIV Q can run both Windows and Android, but you don’t have to shutdown Windows to get to Android, as both operating systems actually run simultaneously, probably via a bare metal hypervisor, and you can switch between the two within the blink of an eye thanks to the “dual OS” button, soon to be known as the “Quick! The boss is coming” button. Windows 8 / Android integration is such that you can just put an Android app shortcut in Windows for easier access. There’s also an S Pen included.

You can watch Engadget hands-on video below to see the device in action.

Samsung has not provided pricing information yet, but said the device should be available in Q3 2013.

The camera runs Android 4.2.2 with TouchWiz interface. It also supports a wide-range of interchangeable lenses that are available for “standard” Samsung DSLR NX cameras. Liliputing has a hands-on video of the camera, where you can see the lenses available for display, and things you could do with the camera.

No price, no release date. It’s probably reserved to people who are into photography, and if you’re just looking for an Android Camera with connectivity, the cheaper Galaxy S4 Zoom will do.
