Cypress PSoC 4100/4200 (ARM Cortex M0) Prototyping Kits Sell for $4

I just wrote about Cypress Semiconductor PSoC 4 ARM Cortex M0 MCUs last week, as well as their $25 PSoC 4 pioneer development board. I’ve just found out there are cheaper, albeit very basic, evaluation boards called PSoC 4100 Prototyping Kit (CY8CKIT-049-41xx) and PSoC 4200 Prototyping Kit (CY8CKIT-049-42xx) that sell for only $4.

PSoC_4200_Prototyping_Kit PSoC 4×000 boards specifications:

  • MCU
    • PSoC 4100 ARM Cortex M0 MCU @ 24 MHz with up to 32 kB of flash, Up to 4 kB of SRAM
    • PSoC 4200 ARM Cortex M0 MCU @ 48 MHz with up to 32 kB of flash, Up to 4 kB of SRAM
  • USB – USB port using CY7C65211 USB-serial controller for PC connectivity and serial interfaces such as USB-UART, USB-I2C, USB-SPI, and USB-GPIO
  • Onboard CMOD capacitors to enable CapSense development
  • A bypass capacitor to ensure the high quality ADC conversions
  • Prototyping – Breadboard compatible through holes for access to power, GPIOs, UART, USB etc…
  • Misc – User and power LEDs, push button to provide a simple user input and trigger the bootloader programming mode.
  • Power – 5V via USB, or 1.8 to 5V from a regulated supply connected to VDD

You’ll need to install PSoC Creator and EZ-USB Software Development Kit (SDK) and connect the board to a Windows PC to play with the kit. Quick start guides, user’s guides, example projects, and hardware design files (schematics, PCB layout, BoM and gerber) are available for download for both board on PSoC 4 CY8CKIT-049 4xxx Prototyping Kits page. If you’d rather have the USB part and the MCU part separate, for example to insert the MCU board into a breadboard, you can snap the boards apart by pressing on the USB-serial board.

The boards can be purchased for $4 on the Cypress Store, although after shipping is included, the total is $19 to my country. So you might be able find better price via one of Cypress’ distributors.

This sounded good until the Windows-only part.

I ordered the sample with one chip mentioned in the previous article.

Cypress just sent me 2 big bags that are the size of an A3 page each with Fedex very urgent, while the 2 chips are less then 2x2cm each.

What a waste for the environment!

Any hope for openocd support? Most of the cortex chips I have seen requires jtag access.
