CHUWI LapBook 14.1″ Full HD Laptop is Powered by Intel Celeron N3450 Apollo Lake Processor

We’ve already seen Voyo Vbook A1 Apollo Lake laptop based on Intel Celeron N3450 SoC going for pre-order a couple of weeks ago, but its has a 11.6″ display only, and I prefer to use larger screens when I need a laptop as it’s less of a shock when switching from my 39″ TV screen connected to my desktop computer. CHUWI LapBook offers just that with many of the same specifications as Voyo laptop, but with a 14.1″ display instead, and a little less storage & battery capacity.

intel-apollo-lake-laptopThe laptop ships with a power supply and a user’s manual, and comes pre-loaded with Windows 10 Home. The Windows license (if any) may not be 100% compliant with Microsoft’s Windows 10 discount license hardware requirements since the storage device where the OS is installed has over 32 GB capacity. AFAIK, Linux support is uncertain at this stage for Apollo Lake hardware.

GearBest has the laptop listed on Arrival Notice with a $292.89 price tag, but actual price could be a little lower, especially once coupons come in play.

  1. Remember that Windows box you got that said 64GB but was supposed to be 128 and then you discovered it WAS 128, or rather two sets of 64GB? Could they Connolly with the Windows discount licensing by doing something similar and using 32GB for then main partition?

  2. Apollo Lake Linux support will probably be similar to what happened with Braswell. I bought a Braswell board the day it went on sale at Newegg last July and it was unusable in most distros. After Ubuntu 15.10 came out, Intel released the Intel Graphics Stack for Linux found at 01.org. It has worked flawlessly ever since. Those graphics drivers were put into the 16.04 release so it works out of the box. They also have support for Fedora.

    I’d imagine it is the same for Apollo Lake. They just came out with a new graphics installer for Ubuntu 16.10 and Fedora 24. While I didn’t find exact details, there are blog posts on Phoronix that talk about open source code being released nearly a year ahead of hardware releases for both Apollo Lake and Gemini Lake.   3. The Gearbest spec under Networks doesnt list a RJ45 Port, but Yes to LAN card – bit sloppy. Does anyone have a photo of the other sides or know if it has Gigabit ?

    Would be useful to know what eMMC version or part installed, and price of the 8GB RAM option.

    On Gearbest you see both sides of this thingie. Of course there’s no RJ45 jack (way too huge) so if you need LAN get an el cheapo RTL8153 based dongle.

    The only slim laptops with ‘native’ GbE were made by Apple. The ‘Thunderbolt to Ethernet’ adapter despite its name isn’t using Thunderbolt but extends PCIe over the short wire and in the dongle is the usual BCM5701 attached to PCIe: low latency, high bandwidth, no USB involved.
