Netgem N7500 & N9700 Media Centers and N8400 Media Server

Netgem will be present at IBC 2011 in Amsterdam this week.

They have updated their website this week, where we can see their current Sigma Designs platform such as the N5200 Internet OTT adapter  and N8200 Media Center as well as the new platform based on Broadcom solutions namely:

  • N7500 Media Center based on Broadcom BCM7230 with 1 Tuner and flash storage
  • N8400 Media Server based on Broadcom BCM7413 with 2 to 4 tuners and HDD.
Netgem Platform Overview

In a separate presentation, they also mention the Netbox N9700 which will be released in 2012. There is no mention of the processor used (probably Broadcom) , but the device will support Netgen nCloud Core features (IPTV, Broadcast TV, Pay TV and PVR functions) and nCloud Advances features (Broadcast to 4/6 screens, download to own, download to go, multimedia NAS and convert media to mobile).

You’ll also be able to play games (Gameloft) and do video conferencing via Skype.

Their software platform (nCloud) is somewhat open with an SDK for third party applications and they offer full UI customization, integration with any service platform and porting on third party hardware.

As mentioned above, the processors used are part of Broadcom offering with the BCM7230 for the upcoming N7500 Media Center and the BCM 7413 for the N8400 Media Server.

Broadcom BCM7230 is designed for high definition (HD) IP set-top box (STB) solution ans supports 1080p60 video output, HDMI 1.3 output, high-speed DDR3 (for decoding HD content), high capacity bulk MLC/SLC NAND, SDIO and serial NOR controller technology. It also integrates power management controllers and regulators and  supports Energy Star® and European Code of Conduct set-top box requirements.

The following standards are supported:

  • RVU Alliance’s remote user interface (RUI) technology
  • CEA-2014 RUI client
  • Hybrid Broadcast Broadband TV (HbbTV)
  • Adobe® Flash® Platform for TV
  • Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA®)

The processors also supports HD FastRTV™ channel change acceleration technology that Broadcom claims “improves channel change speeds by up to 500 percent”.

Broadcom BCM7413 is a multi-format IPTV SoC that is optimized to support SD and ED output resolutions, HDMIv.1.3/HDCP1.2 (up to 480p/576p) and video DAC support for S-video and composite video. It also supports dual-SD decode with picture-in-picture (PIP) output. Please note that this processor does not support HD video output (this is not actually not used for a media server).

The BCM7413 combines a fast MIPS CPU, high-speed 2D and 3D graphics processing, including video scaling and motion adaptive deinterlacing, a data transport processor, an HD multi-format digital video decoder, a programmable audio decoder, six video DACs, stereo high-fidelity audio DACs, dual Fast Ethernet ports, triple USB 2.0, a PCI 2.3, a high-speed DDR2 800-MHz memory controller, and a peripheral control unit that provides a variety of set-top box control functions.
