Spreadtrum Announces Quad Core SC5735 SoC for 3G Tablets

Spreadtrum is a Chinese SoC vendor known for its low cost smartphone SoCs, but they’ve recently announced a new SoC with four ARM Cortex A7 cores and a Mali-400MP(2/4) GPU together with WCDMA support for entry-level 3G tablets.

Spreadtrum SC5735 main features are listed below:

  • Processor – ARM Cortex A7 MP4 processor, up to 1.2GHz with 32 KB L1  I-cache, 32 KB D-cache, L2 512KB cache and 32 KB dedicated on-chip SRAM. Boots from NAND, USB, UART, or eMMC
  • Multimedia Features
    • GPU – Mali 400 MP4 or MP2, 40MTri/s,700Mpix/s, OpenGL ES 1.1/2.0
    • Video Decoder – MPEG4/H.263 1080P@30fps; H.264 1080P@30fps ; VP8 1080P@30fps
    • Video Encoder – H.263/H.264/MPEG4 1080P@30fps
    • Video Streaming – MPEG4/H.263/H.264 1080P@30fps
    • 3G-324M Video Telephony
    • Support MP3/AAC/AAC+/MIDI/AMR-NB/WAV format
    • Audio codec included
    • 5MP primary camera and up to 2Mp secondary camera

    • 8-column x 8-row keypad with internal pull-up resistors

    • More than 100 GPIO pins
    • 18 auxiliary inputs to a 12-bit analog to digital converter (auxiliary ADC) for measurement purposes, and 4 inputs for user applications.

    • Integrated MIPI DSI, 4 data lanes
    • Typical image sizes – QCIF, QVGA, WQVGA, CIF, VGA, HVGA, WVGA, FWVGA, qHD, WxGA (1280×768). The company also claims they support 1080p displays.

    • Integrated MIPI CSI, 4 data lanes
    • 5MP primary camera and up to 2MP secondary camera
  • Connectivity Features – Integrated WiFi/Bluetooth/FM/GPS

PadHZ reports SC5735 supports Android 4.4 KitKat, dual-band WCDMA/HSPA+ as well as quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE, and that SC5735 is sampling now with volume production starting next month. The first tablets powered by Spreadtrum SC5735 are expected in H1 2014.

  1. Judging by the Spreadtrum-powered smartphone prices, this should mean some *really cheap* quad core tablets. Not sure how good their designs, support etc are though…

  2. @Marius Hehe, yes that is what I was parafrasing here 😉

    Everyone on the PC side want to know if a new GPU can run Crysis at high resolution with everything enabled.

    However for SoC and media players we instead want to know if it runs XBMC with hardware decoding
