Allwinner A63 2K “Flat Panel” SoC Unveiled at APC 2017 Conference

Allwinner unveiled their latest A63 quad core Cortex A53 SoC for tablet at the APC 2017 conference in Zhuhai, Shenzhen, last week. The processor will be an upgrade to Allwinner A64 with a Mali-T760MP2 GPU, support for 2560 x 1600 displays, and a 6K H.265/VP9 video processing unit.

Some of Allwinner A63 key features:

  • CPU- Quad core Cortex A53 processor with 32KB L1 I-cache, 32KB L1 D-cache, shared 512KB L2 cache
  • GPU – ARM Mali-T760MP2 “high performance” GPU with OpenGL ES 3.2 support
  • VPU – 4K/6K VP9, H.265, and H.264 4K @ 30fps video decoder; Smartcolor 3.0 “video quality enhancement engine”
  • Memory I/F – DDR3, DDR3L, LPDDR3, LPDDR2
  • Storage I/F – eMMC 5.0; TLC/MLC/SLC/EF NAND flash with 80-bit ECC
  • Display I/F – Dual MIPI and eDP interfaces up to 2560 x 1600 resolution
  • Audio – Support for multi-microphone array, multi-channel analog voice signal input and stereo ADC, DAC
  • Package – 15 x 15 mm
  • Manufacturing Process – 28nm

Allwinner will provide an Android N GMS SDK for the processor, which beside tablets, is also expected to be used in point of sales, and digital signage applications. The processor also comes with audio capabilities to support voice commands / APIs like Amazon Alexa. The company has not setup a product page on their website yet, and I got most of the info from an article on Sohu.

  1. I wonder if VP9 will be really supported in HW this time. They said that H5 supports VP9 too, but obviously it was meant that CPU is fast enough to SW decode it.

  2. No GMAC, no HDMI, no DDR4, just better GPU and VPU, it seen that this is not a upgrade of A64.
    H6 is more interesting.

From Allwinner’s perspective this is an A64 upgrade (hence the lower number 😉 ) since GMAC is of no interest (was already pinmuxed with LCD on A64 that’s why we see no A64 laptops/tablets with Ethernet), HDMI got replaced with eDP which is the only reasonable choice for thin tablets or 2-in-1 thingies anyway and DDR4 is uninteresting since they target the lowest end of the tablet/2-in-1 market.

For me personally H6 is not just more interesting but the only interesting new SoC from Allwinner at all. But let’s look at software situation first and if Allwinner again partners only with one ‘special’ board maker like they seem to do now with their R40/V40.

  4. Is it for sure there is no Ethernet on A63? I am fine with it being multiplexed with the LCD pins. We have switched over to MIPI based panels so we don’t need the parallel interface. 100Mb is fine for our needs. I have not seen a complete block diagram for A63 yet.

Might have to switch back to parallel LCD to use with H6.

I only remember that there’s no [R]GMII (so maybe EMAC + internal PHY — don’t know). But at least H6 is said to come with PMIC support so there’s not much need to think about A63 anyway 😉

  6. Has we seen any prices for A63/H6? If they aren’t close to $5 they aren’t interesting. $10 is too much.
