BOSON Kits Feature LEGO Compatible Building Blocks for STEM Education

Last year, DFRobot successfully introduced BOSON Kit “Powerful Building Blocks For LEGO STEM”via Kickstarter, and I’ve just noticed the company is now selling two BOSON Kits on their website:

• BOSON Science Kit for $149
• BOSON Inventor Kit for $249

The kits are plug and pay and do not require coding, nor  soldering. The modules come with built-in magnets, or they can be attached with screws, Velcro or to LEGO parts. BOSON modules are based on Intel Curie BLE modules, but  those are being phased out, so you may want to inquire DFRobot if long term availability / appropriate stock is a concern.

BOSON Science Kit

As its name gives away, the kit is a set of exploration tool for aspiring young scientist with the following items:

• 8 scientific sensors for physics, chemistry and biology:
  • Light sensor
  • Humidity sensor
  • Soil moisture sensor
  • Temperature sensor
  • Waterproof temperature sensor
  • pH sensor (That’s the blue stick in the photo)
  • Conductivity sensor
  • Heart rate monitor
• Plug and play OLED display module for instant result display.
• Power – 1x Mainboard 1IO, x1 Mainboard 3IO, 3x AAA battery holder
• Activity cards that guide kids to start a scientific exploration on 8 different topics.
• Various cables and screw sets

BOSON Inventor Kit

The inventor kits offers a different set of modules, in greater number. It includes 37 modules and other accessories:

• Input modules – Rotation Sensor, Push Button, Self Locking Switch,  Light Sensor, Tilt Switch, Sound Sensor, and Motion Sensor
• Output modules – Ultra Bright LED, LED String Light, Buzzer, Fan, Voice Recorder, Motor Controller with Gared Motor, Servo Controller with Servo
• Function modules – Logic Module-AND, Logic Module-OR, Logic Module-NOT, Splitter Module, Threshold Module, Reversible Counter Module, and Duration Module (0-60s)
• Power – 1x Mainboard 1IO, x1 Mainboard 3IO, 3x AAA battery holder
• 12 activity cards that teach kids how to build interactive projects with LEGO blocks, wearable materials and attached cardboards.
• 5x project cardboards
•  Various cables and screw sets

Kits Resources

The BOSON modules are compatible with Micro:bit, Arduino and other BOSON modules, and you’ll find the tutorials / activity cards for both kits on Github. The company also reports the kit are compatible with Scratch visual programming, and list DFScratch for Windows as the supported software, but I could not find a download link or web page for the latter.  More details may be found on BOSON product page.
