SolidRun i.MX 8M Mini SoM Includes Gyrfalcon Lightspeeur 2803S AI Accelerator

There are already plenty of NXP i.MX 8M Mini boards and system-on-modules, but so far none of those included a neural network accelerator. But that’s now an option as SolidRun and Gyrfalcon teamed up to design SolidRun i.MX 8M Mini system-on-module that combines NXP i.MX 8M Mini processor with Gyrfalcon Lightspeeur 2803S NPU (Neural Processing Unit) in order to speed up AI workloads at the edge.

Software Support and Carrier Board

Gyrfalcon AI accelerator delivers up to 24 TOPS per watt, and 16.8 TOPS @ 300 MHz with only 700mW power consumption. The chip supports AI frameworks such as TensorFlow, Caffe, PyTorch including pre-trained AI models for ResNet, MobilNet, and ShiftNet.

SolidRun will provide support for both Linux and Android running on the NXP processor, as well as HummingBoard Pulse carrier board which was announced last year with USB 3.0 ports, Dual Ethernet, and more. Some limited documentation (e.g. schematics) is already available on the developer’s website, but more information should be posted soon.

SolidRun i.MX 8M Mini SOM is available through SolidRun or Arrow for $56 and up according to the press release, but it is still listed as “Coming Soon” on the product page. For reference, the HummingBoard Pulse carrier board can be purchased for $182 and up with one of the previous i.MX 8M modules without AI Accelerator.

Impressive gear. As is the price.
I wonder why they bother making a single core model.
Hummingboard rates it at 1.5Ghz.
I’ll review a board with MX8M-MINI next month. I can’t wait to see what it’s like. Never had an NXP SoC.

We are using same HummingBoard pulse that is used for i.MX8M SOM to be used with this newer i.MX8M-mini SOM; thus the 1.5GHz which was limitation for i.MX8M. The i.MX8M-mini is 1.8GHz capable (14nm process node).

As you have probably observed; the i.MX8 family of SoCs is quite wide and a bit confusing naming and feature wise.

Not sure how SolidRun stays in business as it seems to be impossible to get any products from them. Have had an order open since March and still don’t have a ship date!

Have you emailed sales for an update? Generally our lead time is 8 weeks for non-stock orders. We are definitely on the edge of that if you ordered the end of March, but supply chain availability can extend production runs. Our sales or support email addresses are a faster means of order status. Glad you are interested in our products and hope we can resolve your order delays.

If it was a non-stock order I should have been notified at time of order! And I did email about order status and was told it would be shipped by 5/15. When that date passed I emailed again and was told a vague beginning of June. Well it’s the beginning of June and I still have no ship date! I was interested in ordering additional products, but I don’t have any confidence in a company that doesn’t keep enough stock to ship orders in less than 6 weeks.
