Intel Raptor Lake credit card-sized SBC SBC with dual USB 3.2, GbE, 2.5GbE, HDMI

AAEON provides support for Windows 10 64-bit and Ubuntu 22.04.3 with Linux Kernel 6.2 for the de next-RAP8 SBC. Those are not exactly the latest versions of the Windows/Ubuntu operating systems, but the company may have been conservative as it’s the advertised version for the drivers.

The de next credit card-sized SBC family was introduced in 2022 with the de next-TGU8 and de next-V2K8 models powered by 15W Intel Core Tiger Lake and AMD Embedded V2000 SoCs, respectively, and the de next-RAP8 brings that to another level with 15W, 13th Gen Intel Raptor Lake processors.

de next-RAP8 SBC and DENEXT-FAN01 cooling fan

It’s impossible to sufficiently cool a 15W processor on a small credit card/Raspberry Pi-sized SBC with a heatsink, so the de next-RAP8 relies on the DENEXT-FAN01 fansink solution with a large heatsink covering the complete bottom side of the board and integrated with a cooling fan.

The smallest Raptor Lake SBCs we previously covered were all based on the Pico-ITX form factor (100×72 mm) with products like the DFI RPP051 and AAEON PICO-RAP4. It’s quite possible PL1 and PL2 power limits need to be adjusted lower for the de next-RAP8 to work optimally.

  1. “AAEON provides support for Windows 10 64-bit”

Also: “Windows 10’s end-of-life (EOL) is October 14, 2025. After this date, Microsoft will no longer provide free security updates, technical assistance, or software updates for Windows 10. Users are encouraged to upgrade to Windows 11 for continued support and a more modern experience”

… so on this hardware, in 4 months time: non-supported Windows 10, or a special contract with Microsoft to get updates?

    1. Given that most people building commercial products like this (assuming they aren’t using Linux) are using Windows 10 LTSC IOT, so they will get support until 2032. These specific licenses were created for industries that need longer than normal OS support due to infrequent upgrades, etc..

    2. This things comes with Windows 10 IoT LTSC wichnhas EoL on Jan 13 – 2032, so no problem.
Besides, an industrial PC is usually note connected to the Internet, so no parches are really nessesary.

  2. If there was dual 2.5gig Ethernet instead of 2.5+1, this could have been a good NAS/router platform. The i3 version could probably be very good for a mini NAS. 4 lanes PCIe 3 should be enough for at least a 4i hba card

    1. I often have to wonder on devices like these from AAEON/UP! if switching to 2.5GBE and regular GBE instead of two full 2.5GBE really has any sort of impact on the price of the device, considering AAEON and UP! devices are usually very expensive as they only seemed to be targeted towards industrial and commercial customers with deeper pockets…
