With products like these, I always want to know the reputation of the manufacturer and if they open source the device tree.
Then these devices can live forever with projects like LibreELEC.
With LibreELEC?
Only as an example.
If it is Android TV/Casting certified, you can be sure that the bootloader will be locked. And beside Android, nothing else currently runs on the s905x5m…

Here’s Hardkernel’s kernel tree for S7D based on vendor BSP kernel: https://github.com/hardkernel/linux/tree/odroids7d-5.15.y
They started selling their ODROID-C5 based on S905X5M few months ago and as usual provide Linux images.
By the way, which board/chipset is now recommended if one wants to play 4K Dolby Vision mkvs smoothly using libre/open/coreelec?
I think Nvidia Shield is the gold standard.
Personally, I get by with an Odroid C2.
Are you able to play Dolby Vision mkvs with the C2?
What are the odds that this box shipped from China comes preloaded with malware?
I’d say it inversely correlates with the odds of successful legal action against the vendor/manufacturer.
The risk is just too high for my tastes so for years I’ve simply been using a compact PC with an air mouse for IPTV. The UI is not as clean and easy as “Android TV” but I feel I have at least some influence and control over it.
Ugoos not certified with Netflix and Amazon, and hotstar
Mi box 3 is 43$ in Aliexpress.
Is 2gb makes the price double?
Are you sure there really is a USB3 port? AFAIK there is no PCIE/USB3 IP present on an s905x5m SoC?
I’m not sure at all, and that’s why the specs read:
> USB 3.0 Type-A host port; note: Amlogic S905X5M is not supposed to support USB 3.0, but one of the USB ports below is clearly Blue…
Oops, sorry, missed that line. You spotted it too already.
On ODROID-C5 page: Due to SoC design constraints, there’s no USB 3.0 Super-Speed or PCIe bus built into the chip. As a result, all USB ports on the ODROID-C5 only support up to USB 2.0 High-speed devices.
It is the continual pathetic specs of these boxes that amuses me.
32GB eMMC flash, 1 x USB 3 port, 1 x USB 2 port.
Same old design regardless of the I/O capabilities of the SOC.
Features like VRR are good.
Android has also developed such that it can now use X86 based software in apps like Winlator.
I was buying the same deign ethos boxes 10 years ago.
Why not a couple of extra USB ports, some internal storage that is decent to begin with and some internal expansion. This cries out for an M.2 slot.
2.5Gb Ethernet anyone?
For what is £90 in the UK, today I can get a new N100 Mini PC, 8Gb RAM, 256Gb storage and Windows out of the box for £85, delivered from local stock too.
It’s not as if AMLogic came up with a SOC to rival at least the power of the RK3588.
This is drip drip tech and whilst it may be said that this has a particular niche, $99/£90 feels rather expensive compared to what other options I may consider, with far superior (and versatile) tech onboard.
> Same old design regardless of the I/O capabilities of the SOC
The SoC’s I/O capabilities are even lower than what you expect based on a blue USB port.
It’s Amlogic after all but compared to their former ‘standard’ (single USB3 and PCIe Gen2 multiplexed) this here is even worse since the S905X5M has neither USB3 nor PCIe but just two USB2 ports (host/OTG). If you want more than a TV box or TV stick… why even looking at anything Amlogic?
99€? this price is ridiculous. There is other Android TV box with these specs for 42€ right now so that price is clearly a mistake and will sell very little.
Before end of the year I am sure there will be more models coming up in Aliexpress and we will see some even under 40€.
By then I hope it has at least Armbian and some emulation distro to have fun with it 🙂
Here’s short demo of Android TV 14 running on SEI Robotics S905X4 having TV tuner. Have to admit, they improved channel switching and EPG also works fine:
