Waveshare’s updated Raspberry Pi 5 dual micro HDMI to HDMI adapter adds NVMe storage support

Waveshare has recently released the Pi5 Connector Adapter (C), an upgraded version of its earlier Pi5 Connector Adapter, adding support for M.2 NVMe SSDs and enabling direct OS booting from an SSD.

The board connects to the Raspberry Pi 5 via its 16-pin PCIe interface and supports M.2 NVMe SSDs in 2230/2242 sizes with PCIe Gen2/Gen3 speeds. It also converts the Pi’s micro HDMI ports into full-size HDMI connectors and brings all ports on one side next to the USB and Ethernet ports of the SBC. It offers two methods for power: a USB-C input or a screw-terminal supply.

Pi5 Connector Adapter (C) specifications:

  • Supported SBC – Raspberry Pi 5 (it can support the Raspberry Pi 4B too, but the SSD functionality will not work)
  • Storage – M.2 M-key 2230 / 2242 socket for NVMe SSD (support direct OS boot)
  • Display – 2x HDMI outputs via 2x micro HDMI input ports connected to the Pi 5’s micro HDMI ports
  • Misc
    • 2x 3-pin UART connectors
      • One connector is used to connect the serial debug port of the Raspberry Pi Pi 5 board to the Pi5 Connector Adapter (C) board
      • The other connector is used to connect the UART interface of the expansion board to the host. This design is mainly to more easily access the UART when the system is in a case. See the wiki from the previous adapter.

PCIe To M.2 Multifunctional Adapter connection to Raspberry Pi

Like the old board, this board also enables cable-free connection to the micro HDMI and USB-C ports on the Raspberry Pi 5 board. It also offers flexible power options with either USB Type-C input or a 2-pin screw-terminal connector. More information should soon become available on the wiki (but it’s not up yet).

The package includes the Pi5 Connector Adapter (C) board along with two 100mm 16-pin FFC cables for PCIe connection, a 100mm 3-pin cable, and a 100mm 3-pin squid cable for power or signaling. Waveshare also provides a mounting screw for securing an M.2 SSD to the adapter.

The Waveshare Pi5 Connector Adapter board is available on Aliexpress for $11.72, on Amazon for $17.27, and Waveshare’s official store for $9.99.

  1. I would like to get the Waveshare pcie to M.2 multifuntional adapter for use with my pi 5. I have one question, though. Do I plug the pi 5 power adapter into the green thing on the Waveshare or do I have to buy another power supply?

    1. You can plug the Pi 5 power adapter into the USB-C port. You don’t need to use the green terminal block at all. It’s there for people who prefer to power the Pi using a different power adapter.
