Nordic Semi nRF93M1 IoT modules offer LTE Cat 1bis cellular connectivity, Wi-Fi location capabilities

Nordic Semiconductors introduced the nRF93M1 LTE Cat 1bis IoT modules at Mobile World Congress 2026 with up to 10 Mbps downlink and 5 Mbps uplink, as well as built-in Wi-Fi location capabilities.

Two variants will be offered: the nRF93M1-LABA supporting LTE bands for Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and Africa, and the nRF93M1-LACA supporting a wider range of LTE bands and certifications for worldwide deployments.

Nordic Semi nRF93M1 specifications :

  • LTE Cat-1bis modem with 3GPP Rel. 14 support
  • 617-2690 MHz LTE FDD and TDD band support
  • Power Class 3 (23 dBm)
  • Support for (e)UICC/eSIM (SGP.32 IoT) and Software SIM (SoftSIM) framework
  • Data rates – Up to 10 Mbps downlink and 5 Mbps uplink
  • Peripherals – High-speed USB, UART, IOs, coexistence interface, etc…
  • Secure firmware updates via nRF Cloud
  • Location services using Wi-Fi scanning and cellular eCID location
  • Power-saving features – eDRX, PSM, and Nordic proprietary optimizations
  • Certified for global and regional operation (GCF, PTCRB)

nRF Cloud will be enabled out of the box with low-power location services, modem observability, and OTA firmware updates managed via AT commands over UART or USB.

The company will also provide the nRF93M1 Development Kit (DK) using the nRF54L15 as a host MCU for evaluation and application development. Development can be done with the Nordic development tools and nRF Connect SDK using the nRF93M1 for LTE Cat 1 bis connectivity.

The nRF93M1 modules are currently being integrated into products by “lead customers”, and general availability is scheduled to start in mid-2026. Additional information about the new LTE Cat 1bis module can be found on the product page.

The nRF93M1 was not the only announcement from Nordic Semi at Mobile World Congress, but most other new products appear to be at the “fugazi” stage for now:

  • nRF91 Series – Enhanced with new features and modules
The nRF9151 LTE-M/NB-IoT module, now supports 3GPP-compliant GEO and LEO satellite NTN connectivity and will also include sub-GHz fallback to maintain connectivity when public networks are unavailable. The Nordic nRF91M1 LTE-M and NB-IoT module was also introduced, but the product page has few details at this time, without any photo or diagrams and no information about a devkit.
  • nRF92 Series – Next-generation LTE-M/NB-IoT and satellite NTN
The nRF92 Series is said to be the smallest, highest-integrated, and most power-efficient cellular solution and features a high-performance application MCU combined with Nordic’s Axon NPU (Neural Processing Unit), multi-constellation GNSS receiver, Wi-Fi locationing, and sensor co-processing. It’s designed for smart meters, trackers, labels, industrial sensors, and wearables with multi-year battery life. The module is sampling to lead customers, but general availability is only planned in early 2027.
  • 5G eRedCap – “Nordic is collaborating with lead customers on next-generation 5G eRedCap technologies”.

Nordic will showcase and discuss new solutions at MWC Barcelona 2026 (March 2–5) and Embedded World 2026, Nuremberg (March 10–12).
