Advantech MIO-5356 – An industrial 3.5-inch SBC based on Intel Core Series 3 “Wildcat Lake” SoC

Advantech MIO-5356 is the very first hardware platform based on the upcoming Intel Core Series 3 (Core 300) “Wildcat Lake” SoC we’ve seen. It’s a 3.5-inch SBC designed for industrial applications and powered by up to the Intel Core 7 350 hexa-core processor.

The fanless board supports up to 64GB DDR5 memory, NVMe SSD storage, up to three independent displays via USB-C, HDMI, and LVDS interface, 2.5GbE and GbE networking with TSN and OOB management, and WiFi, Bluetooth, and Cellular connectivity via M.2 sockets. It also features audio connectors, six USB interfaces, RS232/RS485 and CAN Bus interfaces, and more.

Intel Wildcat Lake SBC block diagram

The product page is tagged as “preliminary”, and there are some inconsistencies. For instance, the MIO-5356 specs list two M.2 M-Key sockets, but I can only see one in the block diagram above, and this makes more sense since Wildcat Lake is limited to 6 PCIe lanes. The M-Key socket has two PCIe Gen4 lanes, corresponding to up to 8GB/s (bidirectional) transfer rates, or 32 GT/s in one direction, or about the same as PCIe Gen3 x4. The TDP appears to be configurable from 10W to 28W according to the block diagram above.

The datasheet corroborates the leak we had for the Intel Core 5 320 and Core 7 350 last week, and introduces a new Intel Core 3 305 hexa-core SoC. Advantech lists support for Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2024 and Ubuntu Desktop 24.04 LTS for the Wildcat Lake SBC.

  1. I said most of what I wanted to say about this board, but seeing the full DIMM slot, I hope someone gets a 128 GB CQDIMM working with Wildcat Lake.

    One of the remaining mysteries in the WCL lineup is the Core 3 310. What makes it a “3”? Does it also only have 1 Xe3 core?

    1. It’s not as bad as it looks, as Alder Lane-N offers 9 PCIe Gen3 lanes (8GT/s per lane), and Wildcat Lake has 6 PCIe Gen4 lanes (16GT/s per lane), so the total PCIe bandwidth is higher.

      1. Still, it will be pretty much impossible to make 4 NIC PCs with these cpus without extreme sacrifices and you cannot even think about more

      2. Actually, the old alder lake era pentium 8505 had 1p core, 4e cores and 20 pcie 4.0 lanes, so wildcat lake is a massive downgrade compared to this for a higher price

        1. I think NAS products are one of the few places I’ve ever seen the Pentium Gold 8505. They didn’t bother to put those 1P+4E Alder Lake SoCs in many laptops.

          Is it possible to simply have two devices sharing a PCIe 4.0 lane? Like how RPi had Ethernet and USB on the same bus for a few gens.

  2. If I understand correctly, the Advantech product list PDF states that it likely supports Windows 10 IoT. Is that really the case?

    1. I could see a “Windows 10” logo too, but in a table of operating systems only lists Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2024 and Ubuntu Desktop 24.04 LTS.

      Having said that, Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC could also be supported. Support ends in 2027, and extended support in 2032.

    As things are still under development, I can’t give a concrete release timeline, unfortunately.
