Linux on Qualcomm SoCs has been a roller coaster, with hope often followed by disappointment, at least for the Snapdragon family. The company aims to change that with Qualcomm Linux 2.0 for Dragonwing IoT platforms, as announced on LinkedIn:

Qualcomm Linux 2.0 is a fundamental reset, not an incremental update. It introduces an upstream‑first model with a BSP that tracks mainline, alongside a unified BSP, single system image, and overlay-based architecture that keeps customisations clean and maintainable across releases.
The live session will cover lifecycle and release strategy, core architecture and Yocto changes, and practical migration paths from previous versions. It will also show how the AI, multimedia, and robotics SDKs fit into real workflows, ending with a live bring‑up on the Dragonwing™ IQ9 running end‑to‑end AI inference demos.
“Early release” documentation for Qualcomm Linux 2.0 is already up, and I can see it covers Qualcomm Dragonwing RB3 Gen 2 (QCS6490) and RB3 Gen 2 Lite (QCS5430) development kits, and the more recent Qualcomm Dragonwing IQ-9075 Evaluation Kit (EVK), as well as SoCs such as IQ-8275 and IQ-615. Sadly, the new Radxa Q8B (Snapdragon 8c Gen 3) and Radxa Q5E (Q-6690) single board computers may not be directly supported by Linux 2.0 since the two Qualcomm platforms used are not currently listed in the documentation.
There’s also documentation for the SDK that combines the Qualcomm Intelligent Multimedia and Qualcomm Intelligent Robotics SDKs and runs on top of a Qualcomm Linux/Ubuntu distribution. I could not find much detail about upstreaming browsing the documentation, and at that point I decided to use the built-in AI agent, which pointed me to the recently updated “Qualcomm Linux System Software Architecture” page.
There, we are told that Qualcomm Linux 2.0 is not a standalone distribution, and instead, it’s an upstream‑aligned Linux software stack optimized for Qualcomm SoCs, which provide the following capabilities:
- A single Linux platform that supports multiple Qualcomm SoCs
- Integrated AI, multimedia, and connectivity enablement
- Alignment with upstream Linux kernels, combined with commercial stability
- Standards‑based boot, security, and device management
- A virtualization‑ready architecture
- Standards‑based, open interfaces that support scalability and long‑term maintainability
- Platform‑level power and performance optimization that uses upstream Linux mechanisms with Qualcomm enhancements
- Overlay‑based extensibility that enables Qualcomm software additions without rebuilding the operating system

The keyword here is probably “upstream-aligned”. Qualcomm Linux 2.0 will pair upstream components with optional Qualcomm proprietary software packages as shown in the software architecture above. The project will support both mainline kernel and LTS Linux kernel (currently Linux 6.18). When I cover Linux releases for the Arm architecture, Qualcomm is usually one of the most active companies, and I suspect this to continue, but as I understand so far, they will not just upstream all code related to the aforementioned SoCs and devkits, but focus on keeping all code closer to mainline as feasible with mostly open-source components, but also closed-source binaries for AI, camera, graphics, hypervisor, etc… We may learn more on June 30, when Qualcomm will officially release Linux 2.0 (currently RC3).
