Coin-cell powered Nordic nRF54L15 Tag prototyping platform supports Bluetooth Channel Sounding, Matter, Edge AI

Nordic Semiconductor has launched the nRF54L15 Tag, a tiny coin-cell-powered prototyping platform designed to accelerate the development of ultra-low-power wireless IoT devices, including asset trackers compatible with the Apple Find My and Google Find Hub ecosystems.

Built around the company’s nRF54L15 wireless SoC, the 33 mm-diameter tag uses a 2.4 GHz radio and includes two on-board antennas to improve distance-measurement reliability with Bluetooth Channel Sounding. The platform also integrates a 6-axis IMU and an environmental sensor, which can be used in tracking, sensing, and basic edge processing applications.

The tag is designed for low-power operation and stays in deep sleep until woken up by a low-power accelerometer when movement is detected, helping extend battery life. With the help of the six-axis IMU and environmental sensors, the device can be used for gesture recognition, motion anomaly detection, environmental monitoring, and Edge AI data collection. This makes the tag suitable for prototyping smart wearables and sensor-rich IoT devices. More hardware-related docs are available on Nordic’s docs page.

The platform also supports Matter over Thread for the rapid development of smart home devices. With built-in environmental sensing, it can be used for applications like Smart weather stations, Indoor air quality monitors, and connected home sensors.

On the software side, the nRF54L15 Tag is supported by the nRF Connect SDK, which includes Prebuilt samples for Find My and Find Hub Bluetooth and Matter stacks, as well as support for the nRF Edge AI add-on, enabling the IMU to perform tasks such as gesture recognition and vibration monitoring.

The tag comes with preloaded firmware that lets it act as a Bluetooth device right out of the box. You can connect to it via a smartphone app, see button-press updates in real time, and control the onboard LED remotely, making it easy to test the hardware and Bluetooth connection without writing any code.

It can be programmed using any nRF54, nRF53, or nRF91 series development kit via the DEBUG OUT port. It also supports programming with a SEGGER J-Link, as well as over-the-air (OTA) firmware updates. Nordic provides full documentation, including schematics, BOM, and Gerber files for custom hardware development.

The nRF54L15 Tag is currently available for purchase for about $30 through distributors such as Farnell, Rutronik, and Braemac. More details, including hardware files and precompiled firmware downloads, can be found on the product page and in the press release.
