ESP32-C5 dual-band WiFi 6 and Bluetooth LE IoT board features 1.47-inch color LCD

We’ve covered plenty of connected displays based on ESP32 chips over the years, but the Waveshare ESP32-C5-LCD-1.47 is a little different, since it’s the first to feature an ESP32-C5 chip for dual-band WiFi 6 connectivity.

It’s basically based on the ESP32-C6-LCD-1.47 design, but replaces the ESP32-C6 supporting 2.4 GHz WiFi 6 with an ESP32-C5 capable of handling both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz WiFi 6. Other features mostly remain the same: a 1.47-inch 262K-color display with 320 x 172 resolution, 4MB of flash, an RGB LED, a microSD card slot, and two 9-pin headers for GPIO expansion.

Waveshare provides basic instructions to get started with the ESP-IDF framework and the Arduino IDE, as well as code samples for LVGL, on the wiki. Since the ESP32-C5-LCD-1.47 design is basically the same as the ESP32-C6-LCD-1.47 devkit, existing projects for the latter might eventually be ported to the ESP32-C5 board. Those include CircuitPython firmware, Pierre Gode’s Bandwatch and BleWatch projects for Wi-Fi activity monitoring and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) proximity metering and scanning, and a few other projects.

The ESP32-C5-LCD-1.47 board is sold for about $13-$14 on AliExpress, $19.99 on Amazon, and $11.99-$12.99 on the Waveshare store. Prices don’t include shipping and potentially taxes, and you can select whether you need pre-soldered headers. Note that if you are from the European Union, a new 3 Euros customs duty fee has been added for items under 150 Euros to “ensure fairness and safety“, so don’t be surprised if you see an additional 3 Euros when checking out, excluding VAT.

  1. That’s not the way the new tax works.
    It is only applied on packages coming from outside the EU.
    If you buy online and make sure the product is shipped from the EU, there is no tax.
    I’ll grant you this may be tricky with products just out from the chinese factory, but in practice it is possible to buy european.

    1. Probably 95%+ of products posted on CNX Software are shipped from outside the EU, mostly from China. It’s probably not possible to get the Waveshare ESP32-C5-LCD-1.47 board shipped from Europe as of today, so any order will be subject to the 3 Euros customs duty fee.

      1. I anticipate that they’ll quickly work around this by grouping small orders, sending them together to EU (no tax since >150 EUR) then dispatch them from EU. Most parcels you receive in the EU right now already pass via an intermediary who adds a sticker with your address on it, so it will not be that big of a deal to slightly adjust the process I think.

          EU electronics folks, it’s time to make a shell company and get an EORI/VAT number, even if you sell one thing a year. The 3€ tax per component type doesn’t apply to professional buys

        2. “no tax since >150 EUR” – I beg to differ, there will be no flat 3 EUR tax, but because the value is > 150 EUR you actually need to do your regular full-blown customs import procedure – listing specific codes with different tax rates for each, etc (yes, some rates might be 0%, but the burden to list each specific code is what drives this temporary 3 EUR tax untill they find a way to make the former process easier and more digital)

          1. I find it normal to pay VAT since you also pay it to local vendors. What I’m not fine with is paying 3 EUR per component when I buy multiple components, particularly at an era where electronic components all come from China.

  2. Missed opportunity here to finally add a touch-capable screen to these series. Would have made this even more highly useful for some cool projects…

  3. The alternative would have been to no more list CN as a developing country, postage would immediately go up, as the recieiving country’s post would legally be entitled to take their share of the last mile transport from the postage fees due…
