The cost savings mostly come from the processor itself, as well as smaller RAM and storage capacities (4GB vs 8GB, 32GB vs 128GB). The DS04 is limited to 4K video output, while the DS08 supports 8K, and the USB ports offering is now 1x USB 3.0 + 2x USB 2.0, instead of 2x USB 3.0 + 1x USB 2.0. Apart from that, the hardware features are the same.
One benefit of the new model is the upgrade to Android 14 from Android 13. The advantages of selecting a specialized digital signage over a cheaper TV box are that it’s designed for 24/7 operation and implements features such as screen rotation, scheduled power on/off enabled by a real-time clock, and a watchdog timer to minimize downtime in case the system hangs or crashes. You can check the digital signage features section of our DS08 review to better understand how these work and are implemented.

The DS04 ships with a 12V/2A power adapter, an HDMI cable, and an infrared remote control. The company didn’t provide availability and price information, but I suspect samples of the DS04 will sell for around $200+ on the company’s AliExpress store, considering the DS08 goes for $300, and the earlier DS03 for $184 in the same 4GB/32GB configuration and an RK3399 SoC.
