OpenInfrared Point is a universal remote hub built around ESP32-S3 that lets users control compatible devices from a smartphone by scanning a QR code or tapping an NFC tag, eliminating the need for dedicated remote controls.
Powered via USB-C, the Point hub can learn IR codes from existing remote controls and supports infrared, IP (HTTP), and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) device control, with RF support planned as a future add-on. Hardware features include an IR output for external emitters, an audio input for private TV audio streaming, built-in NFC, QR-code access, and support for controlling TVs, projectors, AV receivers, air conditioners, streaming devices, and other compatible equipment.

The OpenInfrared Point is designed for local operation and can function without an internet connection or cloud services. Control and automation are handled locally on the device, and the built-in HTTP API allows you to easily integrate it with Home Assistant, Apple Home, Alexa, Google, Smartthings, or IFTTT.
The hub stores remote configurations, macros, and virtual remote layouts locally so you can access the control interface by scanning a QR code or tapping the integrated NFC tag. The project also plans to provide an open database of learned IR codes and release the hardware and software as open source in the future, most probably when the crowdfunding campaign ends.


It’s not a new concept, since we’ve previously covered smart IR hubs, such as the BroadLink RM mini 3 and the XIAO Smart IR Mate, both of which were priced at around $10 at the time of launch… By comparison, the OpenInfrared Point starts at $149 on Kickstarter. The higher price can be partially explained by the extra features such as QR code and NFC access, audio input, and the more polished app. Whether these extra features are worth paying over ten times more than a typical IR hub is debatable.
The OpenInfrared Point is available on Kickstarter with early-bird pricing starting at $149 for a single hub, while Duo, Trio, and Business Pack (10 units) options are priced at $249, $349, and $1,000, respectively. The campaign is scheduled to end on August 13, 2026, with shipping costs varying by region.
