$99 Xteink X4 Pro 4.3-inch touchscreen eReader to support CrossPoint Reader open-source firmware

Xteink X4 Pro is a pocket-sized eReader with a 4.3-inch touchscreen E Ink display, a 16GB microSD card, 2.4 GHz WiFi and Bluetooth wireless connectivity, and a 1100 mAh battery.

Previous models like the X3 and X4 e-readers were based on the ESP32-C3 RISC-V microcontroller, but the company has not disclosed which MCU was used in the new X4 Pro model. However, a recent comment on GitHub points to the X4 Pro featuring a more powerful ESP32-S3 microcontroller.

It ships with firmware supporting English, Japanese, and Simplified/Traditional Chinese. However, other languages including Korean, Turkish, Russian, Vietnamese, Malay, Indonesian, Thai, and a range of European languages will be rolled out via future firmware updates.

However, one good thing with the Xteink X4 Pro is that its firmware is unlocked, so you can also install a third-party firmware as explained on the website:

All units purchased directly through the XTEINK official website are exempt from third-party firmware restrictions. This commitment applies to all past and present models, with no planned changes for future updates.

One such firmware will be CrossPoint Reader, which is already working on the previous generation Xteink X3 and X4 models, as well as Seeed Sticky, M5Stack M5Paper, and Lilygo T5. The X4 Pro doesn’t appear supported yet, but The Verge reports that Xteink is now an official partner of the project, and the Xteink X4 Pro will be officially supported once it starts shipping to customers.

XTEINK X4 Pro package content

The X4 Pro E-Reader ships with a 16GB microSD card, a matte screen protector, two e-Reader adhesive metal rings, a magnetic charging adapter, and a quick start guide. It can be pre-ordered now for $99. Deliveries are scheduled to start by August 2, 2026. The older ESP32-C3-based X4 model without touchscreen and backlight, and a smaller battery, goes for $69 on Amazon.
