Sovol has launched the M1D, an open-source IDEX (Independent Dual Extruder) 3D printer with a fixed dual-extruder architecture and interchangeable toolheads that support up to seven independently heated toolheads (one fixed and six swappable). It comes in two variants: the open-frame M1D Essential and the M1D Advanced, which adds a full enclosure and a chamber heating module capable of reaching up to 60°C.
The M1D uses a patented automatic tool changer for swapping print heads in as little as five seconds and supports Single, Multi-Head, Copy, and Mirror printing modes. It enables multi-material or/and multi-color prints, including adding water-soluble support to a print to remove the need to manually remove support (see video at the end of this post for demo). The printer targets makers, engineers, prototype development, and small-scale production by reducing purge waste while improving printing efficiency and material flexibility.

The printer features a dual-camera Auto Vision calibration system that aligns the toolheads up to 2.5x faster than traditional probe-based methods. It also uses real-time mechanical Z-lift and Z-offset compensation, alongside an onboard accelerometer for vibration compensation to reduce ringing and ghosting during high-speed printing. It also features a six-channel automatic filament system and an AI chamber camera to detect foreign objects and failed prints. However, Sovol notes these AI detection features will be activated later via a software update.
On the software side, the M1D utilizes OrcaSlicer slicing software by default, compatible with both macOS and Windows.
The Sovol M1D is currently available on Kickstarter, which has already raised more than $2.7 million from over 1,700 backers with 29 days remaining. Early Bird rewards start at HK$10,184 (~$1,299) for the M1D Essential and HK$12,536 (~$1,599) for the M1D Advanced, excluding shipping. Deliveries are expected to begin in November 2026.
The company is also offering a two-year warranty for the printer itself, along with a three-month warranty for consumables like the nozzle and the PEI build plate. Additionally, there are optional add-ons, including the Sovol SH03 Filament Dryer and heavily discounted PLA and PETG filament bundles.
As with any crowdfunding campaign, backing the project carries some risk, but Sovol has been manufacturing 3D printers since 2019 and has previously delivered products such as the Sovol SV01, which we also reviewed back in 2019; after that, the SV02 came out in 2020 and the SV08 shortly afterward.
