Espressif is Working on a New Wi-Fi and Bluetooth LE Chip with Hardware SSL Support

Espressif came to fame thanks to its low cost ESP8266 WiFi chip which was originally designed for connected lightbulbs, but soon got used in a variety of  applications, and ESP8266 modules must now be the most popular solutions to add WiFi to IoT projects, as long as they are not battery powered. The company has recently announced they were working on a new chip, whose name as yet to be decided, that will support both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Low Energy. Details are sparse, but we do know the chip will come with 500KB RAM, support hardware SSL and possibly ECDH, deliver 500 DMIPS of performance, and consume 5 uA in deep sleep mode. The company asked for beta testers via their twitter account around 2 weeks ago, so I guess it’s a bit too late to apply. John Lee, working for Espressif, also said the new part should become available […]

HummingBoard Edge SBC Gets an mSATA/M.2 Connector, an eMMC Flash, and More I/Os

SolidRun launched its HummingBoard family last year with a board with a form factor similar to the Raspberry Pi, but instead of using a Broadcom processor, the boards were based on Freescale i.MX6 single, dual or quad core processors. The company has recently introduce a higher end board with Hummingboard Edge that adds an M.2 connector, eMMC flash, 7 to 36V DC power input, more camera interfaces, a DSI interface, and more GPIOs. The following comparison table shows the differences between the new Hummingboard Edge, and the older HummingBoard Pro and Base boards. HummingBoard-Edge HummingBoard-Pro HummingBoard-Base uSOM model i.MX6 based Solo to Quad Core uSOM Memory Up to 4GB DDR3 Storage uSD, eMMC, M.2/mSATA uSD, mSATA uSD Connectivity 1x RJ45*, 4x USB 2.0, mPCIE with SIM card holder 1x RJ-45*, 2x USB 2.0 Hosts, 2x USB 2.0 header, mPCIE half-size 1x RJ-45*, 2x USB 2.0 Hosts Media HDMI-out, LVDS, analog […]

Freescale i.MX7 96Boards Compliant Board Coming in Q4 2015

96Boards is an open hardware platform specification for 32-bit and 64-bit processors boards (64+32 = 96), but so far only 64-bit board have been launched or announced, and 32-bit boards were missing from the equation. Freescale will soon change that as they’ve partnered with Arrow Electronics on a 96Boards compliant board powered by Freescale i.MX7 Dual due to be released at the same time as i.MX7 enters mass production, which is scheduled for November 2015. Freescale i.MX6 96Boards (MCIMX7 ?) preliminary specifications: SoC – Freescale i.MX 7Dual with two ARM Cortex A7 cores @ 1.0 GHz, one ARM Cortex M4 core @ 266 MHz, and a 2D image processing engine (no 3D GPU) System Memory – TBD (Probably 512MB or 1GB RAM) Storage – micro SD card slot up to 64GB + flash? (TBC) Video Output – HDMI connector + DSI via HS expansion header Connectivity – Wi-Fi 802.11g/n and […]

Simblee Low Latency Bluetooth LE IoT Module Loads Its App to Your Smartphone on Demand

RF Digital launched RFDuino Bluetooth Low Energy board in 2013/2014, and the company has now developed Simblee module, whose name is derived from “Simple”  and “BLE”, and offers low latency (3ms) and integrates a user application that’s automatically and temporary loaded to your smartphone or tablet upon connection. The module is also part of an add-on board (RFD77201) for RFDuino board. Simblee RFD77101 module specifications: MCU – ARM Cortex M0 micr-controller (Nordic nRF51822???) Memory/Storage – 24KB RAM and 128KB flash for user application Bluetooth Smart / LE Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) Stack Simblee interference immunity 3ms latency (for connection); 10us accuracy (jitter) -93dBm receiver sensitivity -55dBm to +4dBm TX power Physical range adjustable from a few inches to hundreds of feet Integrated antenna, integrated shield I/Os 29 GPIOs (flexible pin configuration) 6x ADC inputs 4x PWM outputs 2x SPI master/slave, 2x I2C, 1 x UART Security – Built in AES […]

Cloudshell for XU4 is a $39 NAS Kit for ODROID-XU4 Board

Hardkernel launched ODROID-XU4 development board a couple of weeks ago. The board is a low cost ($74) update to ODROID-XU3 development board, with an Exynos 5422 octa core processor (4x A15, 4x A7), 2GB RAM, Gigabit Ethernet and USB 3.0, making it a pretty good target for a NAS.  It’s easy to connect all requires parts such as hard drive and power supply together, but it would normally be a mess on your desk. So the company create a NAS kit for the board with an enclosure, cables, fans, and even an LCD display with they call Cloudshell for XU4 for sell for $39, so you can get a high relatively high performance NAS for around $113 + shipping, which will vary depending on your distributor, as well as an HDD or SSD drive. Cloudshell kit content: Enclosure with top and bottom covers, rear, front and side panels. Available in […]

Zidoo X1 Android TV Box Unboxing and Teardown

Zidoo X1 is an Android media player powered by Allwinner H3 quad core processor with support for 4K videos up to 30Hz and H.265 / HEVC video codec. The company sent me one unit for review, and today I’ll start by unboxing and tearing down the device, before further testing to get the review posted in a few days. Zidoo X1 Unboxing I’ve received the package by (MY)DHL a few days after it was shipped. The package shows some of the main features like 4K and 3D support, H.265/HEVC codec, Kodi support, and ZIUI which must be the name given to Zidoo user interface. Leadcore Roadmap Until 2017 Shows 14nm FinFET Processors Planned

I first heard about Leadcore in 2013 when they announced several ARM Cortex A7 and A9 mobile processors, but since then they’ve become a bit more popular after Leadcore L1860C quad core processor found its way into in Xiaomi Redmi 2A smartphone. The company has now shown its roadmap for  2016, and 2017 with some interesting developments. We can expect three processors in 2016 all with 64-bit ARM cores manufactured using 28nm process: An 8-core 64-bit processor with Mali-T820 GPU and LTE Cat 6 modem A 4-core 64-bit processor with an unnamed Mali GPU and LTE Cat 6 modem A quad core Cortex A53 processor with TD-LTE and LTE FDD And in 2017, one processor is scheduled, should be manufactured using 14nm FinFET process, which could mean 2017 will be the year 14nm FinFET goes mainstream even for lower cost processors. That currently unnamed processor will feature eight 64-bit cores […]
