AMD Unveils Low Power Mobile “Mullins” APUs for Tablets and Hybrid Laptops

AMD has announced its 3rd-generation Mainstream and Low Power Mobile Accelerated Processing Units (APUs), codenamed codenamed “Beema” and “Mullins,” respectively, featuring four x86 Puma+ CPU, AMD Radeon graphics, and a platform security processor (PSP) with an ARM Cortex-A5 core for ARM TrustZone  security. Beema APUs have a TDP between 9W and 15W, whereas Mullins APUs all have less than 5W TDP (2.8W SDP). So I’ll only cover cover Mullins processors in this post, as they may offer an alternative to Intel Bay Trail-T processors. There are now 3 more APUs part of AMD’s tablets and 2-in-1 solutions: A10 Micro-6700T, A4 Micro-6400T, and E1 Micro-6200T. They are highlighted in green in  the table below, and compared to previous generations: Model Radeon Brand CPU Clock Speed (Max/Base) CPU Cores on Die TDP Total L2 Cache GPU Clock Speed (Max/Base) DDR SDRMA Max Memory Speed A10 Micro–6700T Radeon R6 2.2 GHz 4 4.5W 2MB […]

Android 4.0.1 on x86 processors (Intel / AMD)

Last year, I wrote how to run Android 1.6 in a PC. Android-x86 has since made the newer Android versions available for the following devices: ASUS laptops and tablets. Netbooks such as the ASUS Eee PC Intel Atom tablets such as the Tegav2 Tablet HP Pavilion tx2500 AMD persimmon platform AMD Brazos platform such as the MSI 110W tablet. They now have made Android 4.0.1 available for the AMD Brazos Tablet. Android-x86 4.0-devel live and installation iso for AMD Brazos platform is only a developer’s version as it can not be considered stable just yet. Here are the instructions to get the source code if you want to build it yourself and possibly adapt it to your own hardware: $ repo init -u git://git.android-x86.org/manifest.git -b ics-x86 $ repo sync Android-x86’s Chih-Wei Huang says that WiFi, Multitouch ad OpenGL ES for AMD Radeon works, but sound, camera, Ethernet and hardware acceleration for […]

AMD G-Series Based Mini-ITX: Advantech AIMB223

Advantech announced a mini-ITX board – AIMB223 – featuring AMD G-Series processors: T56N (dual core @ 1.65 GHz)), T40E (dual core @ 1GHz) and T44R (single core @ 1.2 GHz). The AIMB-223 board comes with up to 4GB of DDR3 SDRAM, PCI and PCI Express expansion, four SATA III interfaces, gigabit Ethernet, USB 2.0 and more. That’s yet another mini-ITX board based on AMD G-Series such has the iBase MI958 or the Fujitsu D3003-0x.  The relative proliferation of mini-ITX board based on AMD embedded processors is probably due to the fact that AMD provides a Mini-ITX Reference Design. Here are the specifications of the board: Processor: AMD G-Series T56N (1.65GHz – dual-core – 18W TDP) or AMD G-Series T40E (1GHz – dual core – 6W TDP) or AMD G-Series T44R (1.2GHz – single core – 9W TDP) Chipset: AMD A55E Memory: up to 4GB of DDR3 SDRAM Expansion Slots: 1 […]

AMD G-Series Based IBase MI958 Mini-ITX Board

Taiwan-based iBase unveiled MI958 Mini-ITX boards built around AMD’s G-Series T56N, T48N and T40N processors. The board supports up to 8GB memory,  offers several PCI expansion slots, 2 Ethernet Ports, 8 USB ports, 4 serial ports, 4 SATA ports and supports  dual display capability via VGA, DVi-D or LVDS. The MI958 is targeted at digital signage and surveillance systems. Here are iBase MI958 specifications and features: Processor: AMD G-Series dual-core APU T56N (1.65GHz), T48N (1.4GHz) or T40N (1 GHz) Chipset: AMD A55E FCH System Memory: up to 8GB of DDR3 RAM (2x DDR3 DIMM) Expansion Slots: Mini PCI Express slot PCI Express x1 slot PCI slot Networking: 2 x PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Other I/O: External: VGA DVI-D 2 x Serial port 4 x USB 2.0 Audio: mic in, line in, line out Internal: LVDS 4 x USB 2.0 2 x Serial port 4 x SATA Digital I/O (4 in, 4 […]

AMD Embedded G-Series mini-PC, motherboard and thin client

AMD announced its embedded processor G-Series at CES 2011. Here are some products that will be soon available based on this platform. Futjisu Mini-ITX mainboards – models D3003-S1 and D3003-S2 The D3003-S1 motherboard will feature an AMD Single-Core T44R (1.2GHz/9W) and the D3003-S2 an AMD Dual-Core T56N (1.6GHz/18W). Both models will have an onboard ATI graphics card with VGA, DVI, LVDS (D3003-S1 only) and diplayport  (D3003-S2 only) outputs, HD Audio,  dual GbE LAN, serial ATA III RAID, mSATA socket support, USB 2.0, 8 Bit GPIO connector and be designed for fanless operation. Mass production of the boards will start in April 2011. Check the preliminary specifications for details. CompuLab’s fit-PC3 mini-PC Compulab already manufactures the fit-PC2 and fit-PC2i based on the Intel Atom platforms running Linux, Windows XP and Windows 7. The Israel-based company  will embed AMD Embedded G-Series processor in its latest fit-PC3 mini-PC. This “miniature fanless industrial PC” […]
