Femto Mega 3D depth camera review – OrbbecViewer and Orbbec SDK in Ubuntu 22.04, body tracking in Windows 11

Orbbec Femto Mega Review

We had a quick look at the Orbbec Femto Mega 3D depth and 4K RGB camera at the end of last year with a look at the hardware and a quick try with the OrbbecViewer program in Ubuntu 22.04. I’ve now had the time to test the OrbbecViewer in more detail, check out the Orbbec SDK in Linux and various samples, and finally test the Femto Mega with a body tracking application using Unity in Windows 11. A closer look at OrbbecViewer program and settings As noted in the first part of the review, the OrbbecViewer program provides color, depth, and IR views for the camera. Let’s go into details for each. The Color mode would be the same as your standard USB color camera. The Femto Mega supports resolution from 1280×720 at 30 fps to 3840×2160 at 25 fps using MJPG, H.264, H.265, or RGB (converted from MJPG). We […]

Renesas introduces 100 MHz RA4E2 and 200 MHz RA6E2 Arm Cortex-M33 MCUs for wearables, sensors, appliances

Renesas RA4E2 RA6E2

Renesas Electronics has added two new groups to its 32-bit RA family of microcontrollers (MCUs) with the 100 MHz RA4E2 and 200 MHz RA6E2 Arm Cortex-M33 microcontrollers designed for “high-performance applications” in small packages such as sensing, gaming, wearables, and appliances. The new microcontrollers are equipped with 40 KB SRAM, 128 KB or 256 KB flash, and integrate various on-chip interfaces such as CAN FD, USB, QSPI, SSI, and I3C interfaces to offer an easy upgrade path for products based on other members of the Renesas RA Family. Renesas RA4E2 MCU group Both the RA4E2 and the RA6E2 are the most cost-effective microcontroller groups of the RA family with integrated CAN FD,  with the RA4E2 group especially well-suited to cost-sensitive applications and other systems requiring relatively high performance, low power consumption, and/or small package size. RA4E2 key features: CPU – Arm Cortex-M33 core with TrustZone @ up to 100 MHz […]

STMicro introduces cost-optimized STM32MP13 Cortex-A7 microprocessor

STM32MP135x-DK Discovery Kit

STMicroelectronics’ STM32MP13 1 GHz single-core Arm Cortex-A7 microprocessor series is the latest addition to the Linux-capable STM32MP1 family, with a cost-optimized design that does without the Cortex-M4 real-time core found in the original STM32MP15 series, while still offering Ethernet, CAN FD, camera and display depending on the specific SKU: STM32MP131, STTM32MP133, or STM32MP135. STM32MP131 The STM32MP131 is a single-core Cortex-A7 core clocked at 650 MHz or 1GHz with Ethernet connectivity and is the most cost-effective part of the new STM32MP13 series. Four parts are available in three different packet sizes (TGBGA 289,  TFBGA 320, and LFBGA 289) as well as some parts with “advanced security features” that include a cryptographic accelerator, memory protections, code isolation mechanisms for runtime protection, functions to ensure platform authentication, and a complete security ecosystem. The STM32MP131 can run entry-level Linux, bare metal or RTOS systems with Microsoft Azure RTOS pre-integrated. STM32MP133 The STM32MP133 single-core Cortex-A7 […]

Renesas RZ/A3UL Cortex-A55 CPU runs RTOS for HMI with quick startup times

Renesas RZ/A3UL

Renesas RZ/A3UL is a single-core Cortex-A55 processor clocked at up to 1 GHz designed to run FreeRTOS or Azure RTOS on high-definition (1280×800) HMI solutions requiring quick startup times such as industrial equipment, home appliances, office automation equipment, audio equipment, and POS terminals. The new RZ/A3UL processor family has the same peripheral functions and package pin assignments as the RZ/G2UL (Arm Cortex-A55/M33) and RZ/Five (RISC-V) families targeting Linux-based HMI applications. Renesas also designed a SMARC 2.1 compliant System-on-Module (SoM) based on the Renesas RZ/A3UL microprocessor to speed up time to market. Renesas RS/A3UL specifications: CPU – Single-core Arm Cortex-A55 processor @ up to 1.0 GHz with 32KB I-cache with parity, 32KB D-cache with ECC, 256KB L3 cache with ECC Internal Memory – 128KB SRAM with ECC Memory & Storage I/F 16-bit DDR4-1600 or DDR3L-1333 memory interfaces with in-line ECC; up to 4GB RAM Octal Peripheral Interface (OPI) for flash or […]

NXP i.MX 93 processor combines Cortex-A55 cores with Ethos U65 microNPU

NXP i.MX 93 (935x/933x)

NXP has unveiled the i.MX 93 processor family comprised of i.MX 935x, 933x, 932x, and 931x parts at this time with up to two Cortex-A55 cores, one Arm Cortex-M33 real-time core, as well as an Ethos U65 microNPU for machine learning (ML). We wrote about i.MX 9 family back in March with NXP telling us it would include an Arm Ethos U-65 microNPU and EdgeLock secure enclave, be manufactured with a 16/12nm FinFET class process, and includes the “Energy Flex” architecture to optimize power consumption by turning on/off specific blocks in the processor. The NXP i.MX 93 is the first family leveraging those new features, and we know have some more details. NXP i.MX 93 processor specifications: CPU 1x or 2x Arm Cortex-A55 @ 1.7 GHz with 32KB I-cache, 32KB D-cache, 64KB L2 cache, 256KB L3 cache with ECC 1x Arm Cortex-M33 @ 250 MHz low power microcontroller with 256KB […]

Microsoft Azure IoT, Balena, Particle, or Toit – Choosing the Right IoT Development Platform

IoT Development Platforms

With the ongoing fourth Industrial Revolution (Industry 4.0), IoT technologies are playing a major role in automating industrial processes. Integrating existing systems with IoT results in an intelligent solution that focuses more on providing better adaptability and resource efficiency. If you start building such systems from scratch while ensuring reliability and other factors, it will surely take a lot of research and time. This is where an IoT development platform steps in to save your time and makes things a lot easier. The main idea behind these platforms is to avoid reinventing the wheel and to provide standardized functions and features, so you don’t waste your time implementing something that someone has already done for you. You can collect data, control and manage apps and connect to their cloud services for better machine-to-machine communication. This article will look at some modern IoT development platforms and finally compare them to help […]
