Chromebooks with Mediatek MT8173 Cortex A72 Showcased at Computex 2015

Chromebooks were originally all based on Intel processor, but eventually ARM based Chromebooks got launched starting with Samsung Exynos, more recently Rockchip RK3288, and soon we’ll have Mediatek Chromebooks based on their latest Cortex A72 + A53 processor. The platform is still in development, but some prototypes are being shown up at Computex 2015 in Taipei. The full specs are not available but we do know the laptop features MT8173 SoC with 2x Cortex A72 cores, 2x Cortex A53 cores, and a PowerVR GX6250 GPU. NotebookItalia is at Computex and in their short video below with can hear the spokesman claiming support for 4K video playback, 2K display, and the presence of Type C USB port that can be used to connect device, but also charging the laptop. Mediatek Chromebooks should offer about twice the single thread performance as Rockchip RK3288 devices, thanks to the use Cortex A72 cores instead […]

Asus Chromebit Chrome OS TV Stick to Sell for Less than $100

Google has just announced Rockchip RK3288 Chromebooks, and also quickly mentioned Chrombit Chrome OS dongle, but with very few details. However, several large US blogs like Engadget and Gizmodo got a sample (mock-up?), and shared more details. So now we have the technical specifications of the dongle, which unsurprisingly also feature RK3288 processor: SoC – Rockchip RK3288-C quad core Cortex A17 processor with ARM Mali-T764 GPU. System Memory – 2 GB DDR3L SDRAM Storage – 16 GB eMMC Flash Storage Video Output – HDMI Connectivity – Dual band Wi-Fi 802.11 2×2 (MIMO) a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 4.0 USB – 1x USB 2.0 host port, 1x micro USB OTG port Power – 5V via micro USB port Dimensions – N/A Weight – N/A It’s quite likely the Rockchip processor won’t run at full speed, at least not for a long period of time, as it’s likely to overheat in such small form factor, […]

Pictures and Specs for CubieBoard 8 Development Board Powered by AllWinner A80 SoC

Back in April, AllWinner announced partnerships with Linksprite and CubieTech for respectively PcDuino 8 and Cubieboard 8 development boards to feature  AllWinner A80 octa core ARM Cortex 15/A7 big.little SoC. However, at the time all we got was some photo-shopped pictures of older versions of the boards with an A80 processor pasted by graphics designers. Some pictures of Cubieboard 8 have now surfaced, and they are clear enough so that we can start to get most of the specs. Here are Cubieboard 8 specifications derived from the pictures (incomplete because we don’t have pictures of the back of the board): SoC – AllWinner A80 octa core big.LITTLE processor with 4 ARM Cortex A15 cores, 4 Cortex A7 cores, and Imagination PowerVR G6200 GPU System Memory – 2GB DDR3 (4x SKhynix H5TQ4G83AFR – 4Gbit RAM chips) – TBC in case they’ve added more RAM chips at the back, unlikely IMHO. Storage […]
