Hardware security flaw impacts Intel Apollo Lake & Gemini Lake processors

A few years go the Spectre and Meltdown hardware security vulnerabilities impacted a wide range of processors from Intel, AMD, Arm, and others. But a newly discovered hardware security flaw impacts specifically the Atom, Celeron, and Pentium from the Apollo Lake, Gemini Lake, Denverton … low-power processors we often feature on CNX Software. Researchers have managed to activate test or debug logic at runtime for some low-power Intel processors, which they could use to escalate privilege, retrieve the “fuse encryption key” aka “chipset key fuse” unique to each processor, and access encrypted data. Most people do not need to panic though, as the hack would require physical access to the machine, and Intel says it is releasing firmware updates to mitigate the vulnerability. High-value targets should care though as the hack only takes 10 minutes, and if a laptop is stolen or lost, a skilled attacker should be able to […]

Intel Denverton based Fanless Network Appliance Comes with 6x Ethernet Ports, 2x SFP Cages

Intel Atom C3000 “Denverton” processors were introduced in 2016 for low power servers and network appliances with four to sixteen cores, and in the following years, many products based on the SoC were launched including GIGABYTE MA10-ST0 server motherboard, AAEON FWS-2360 desktop network appliance, and Supermicro A2SDi-2C-HLN4F Mini-ITX motherboard among others. New Denverton platforms did not get much coverage on CNX Software in the last couple of years, and an article on LinuxGizmos reminded me those still existed, as US-based WIN Enterprises recently launched LP-82000 fanless network appliance powered by Intel Denverton C3338, C3558, or C3758 processor and featuring six Gigabit Ethernet ports, as well as two SFP cages. LP-82000 specifications: SoC (one or the other) Intel Denverton C3338 dual-core processor @ 1.50 GHz / 2.20 GHz (Turbo); 4 MB cache; TDP: 8.5 W Intel Denverton C3558 quad-core processor @ 2.20 GHz; 8 MB cache; TDP: 16 W Intel Denverton […]

AAEON FWS-2360 Denverton Desktop Network Appliance Supports up to 6 Ethernet Ports, SATA Storage

Last summer, we started to see products and motherboards based on Intel Atom C3000 series Denverton SoC, including GIGABYTE MA10-ST0 server motherboard and Axiomtek NA362 network appliance with up to 10 LAN ports. AAEON has informed me they’ve launched their own Denverton network appliance with AAEON FWS-2360 equipped with a pair of fiber/copper SFP GbE ports, four  GbE ports and two Mini-card slots to accommodate WiFi and 4G LTE expansion. The device also comes with an mSATA socket and a 2.5” SATA bay for storage.   AAEON FWS: SoC (one or the other) Intel Atom C3308 dual core Denverton processor @ 1.60 / 2.20 GHz with 4MB cache; 9.5W TDP Intel Atom C3558 quad core Denverton processor @ 2.20 GHz with 8MB cache; 16W TDP System Memory Dual core – 1x DDR4 SODIMM ECC DIMM Quad core – 2x DDR4 SODIMM ECC DIMM Storage – On-board eMMC flash up to […]
