Solar-powered WisMesh Repeaters extend the range of Meshtastic networks

Solar Powered WisMesh Meshtastic Repeaters

RAKWireless has launched two solar-powered Meshtastic range extenders/repeaters: the WisMesh Repeater with a larger battery and external solar panel, and the WisMesh Repeater Mini with a more compact design with an integrated solar panel Meshtastic open-source firmware allows LoRa nodes to be used for off-grid messaging, GPS coordinates sharing, and more. The mesh network relies on nodes to communicate with each other and relay messages to other nodes if needed. However, this does not work reliably when nodes are too far apart or one node goes offline for whatever reason. That’s when Meshtastic repeaters are needed. WisMesh Repeater / Repeater Mini specifications: WisBlock RAK4631 Core Module Wireless SoC – Nordic Semi nRF52840 Cortex-M4F MCU @ 64 MHz with 1MB flash, 256 KB RAM, BLE 5.0, pre-flashed with Meshtastic firmware LoRa transceiver – Semtech SX126x series with support for Meshtastic 8xx and 9xx MHz networks 800 MHz – RU864/ IN865/ EU868 […]

LILYGO T-Deck Pro – An ESP32-S3 LoRa messenger with e-paper touch display, keyboard, and 4G LTE or audio codec option

LILYGO T-Deck Pro

LILYGO T-Deck Pro is a LoRa messenger based on an ESP32-S3 WiFi 4 and Bluetooth 5.x SoC, and offered with a 3.1-inch e-paper display with touchscreen, a Blackberry-like QWERTY keyboard, a GPS module, speaker, microphone, and a 3.5mm audio, as well as IMU and light sensors. It builds upon the T-Deck Plus design, but replacing the 2.8-inch IPS display with a 3.1-inch e-paper display allows for a slimmer design and should offer longer battery life despite the smaller 1,400 mAh battery used in the new model. Two versions of the T-Deck Pro are available: one with a Simcom 4G LTE modem and a cheaper one with a PCM5102A audio codec. LILYGO T-Deck Pro specifications: SoC –  ESP32-S3FN16R8 CPU – Dual-core Tensilica LX7 microcontroller @ up to 240 MHz 2.4 GHz 802.11n WiFi 4 and Bluetooth 5.0 LE connectivity Memory – 8MB PSRAM Storage – 16MB SPI flash Storage – MicroSD card […]

Semtech LR2021 “LoRa Plus” transceiver supports LoRa Gen 4, Amazon Sidewalk, Meshtastic, wM-BUS, Wi-SUN FSK, and Z-Wave

Semtech LR2021

Semtech LR2021, the first chip in the LoRa Plus family, supports LoRa Gen 4 technology with both terrestrial and satellite networks in the Sub-GHz, 2.4 GHz ISM bands, and licensed S-band, while keeping backward compatibility with previous-generation LoRa devices. But it goes beyond just supporting LoRa and LoRaWAN networks, since it features expanded physical layer modulations for fast long-range communication (FLRC) enabling compatibility with various low-power wireless protocols such as Amazon Sidewalk, Meshtastic, Wireless M-Bus (Wm-BUS), Wi-SUN FSK, and Z-Wave when integrated with third-party stacks. Femtofox Pro v1 LoRa and Meshtastic development board runs Linux-based Foxbuntu OS on Rockchip RV1103 SoC

Femtofox Pro v1 kit LoRa and Meshtastic development board

The Femtofox Pro v1 kit is a compact, low-power LoRa and Meshtastic development board running Linux specially designed for Meshtastic networks. Built around the Luckfox Pico Mini (Rockchip RV1103) SBC, this compact development platform supports USB host/device functionality, Ethernet, WiFi over USB, GPIO interfaces, I2C, UART, and a real-time clock (RTC). The most unique feature of this board is that it operates at very low power (0.27-0.4W), making it ideal for solar-powered applications. Additionally, Femtofox supports native Meshtastic client control, USB mass storage, and network reconfiguration via a USB flash drive. It also includes user-configurable buttons for WiFi toggling and system reboot, enhancing its usability. These features make Femtofox particularly useful for applications such as emergency response and off-grid messaging. Solar-powered LLM over Meshtastic solution may provide live-saving instructions during disasters and emergencies

Solar LLM over Meshtastic

People are trying to run LLMs on all sorts of low-end hardware with often limited usefulness, and when I saw a solar LLM over Meshtastic demo on X, I first laughed. I did not see the reason for it and LoRa hardware is usually really low-end with Meshtastic open-source firmware typically used for off-grid messaging and GPS location sharing. But after thinking more about it, it could prove useful to receive information through mobile devices during disasters where power and internet connectivity can not be taken for granted. Let’s check Colonel Panic’s solution first. The short post only mentions it’s a solar LLM over Meshtastic using M5Stack hardware. On the left, we must have a power bank charge over USB (through a USB solar panel?) with two USB outputs powering a controller and a board on the right. The main controller with a small display and enclosure is an ESP32-powered […]

Meshtastic Designer helps you build custom Meshtastic solutions with RAKwireless Wisblock components

Meshtastic Designer

RAKWireless introduced the Wisblock IoT Modular System in 2020 to let developers easily create LoRaWAN IoT solutions with various core modules, baseboards, and sensor/IO modules. The company kept adding new Wisblock modules year after year, and there are now over 120 modules part of the Wisblock ecosystem. While the large choice of modules makes designing IoT prototypes more flexible, customers often face challenges in checking compatibility and selecting the right modules for the right slots. That’s why RAKWireless has been working on web-based online designer tools for the Wisblock ecosystem. The first release is the Meshtastic Designer used to quickly configure and create their own Meshtastic devices from the module to enclosure, and place an order from there once the design is complete. I’ve given it a quick try myself. I wanted a Meshtastic device with a display, a keyboard, a GNSS module, and an air quality sensor since the […]
