Raspberry Pi Gets 5G Cellular Connectivity with Snapdragon X55 Powered HAT

The Raspberry Pi board has long been able to connect to cellular networks either via USB dongles or 3G or 4G LTE HATs that often include GPS as a bonus. But you can now connect your Raspberry Pi 4 or other RPI SBC with a 40-pin header to 5G networks thanks to Waveshare SIM8200EA-M2 5G HAT for Raspberry Pi powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon X55 multi-mode multi-band modem offering 5G/4G/3G cellular connectivity. As we can see from the photo, the 5G add-on comes as part of a cool-looking kit with bottom and top acrylic plates, spacers, a cooling fan plus five antennas for cellular and GNSS connectivity. But the HAT itself integrates a SimCOM SIM8200EA-M2 M.2 module and offers the following specifications: Compatibility – Works with Raspberry Pi boards with a 40-pin GPIO extension header Cellular Connectivity SIM8200EA-M2 core module based on Qualcomm Snapdragon X55 platform with multi-mode multi-band support 5G/4G/3G networks support SIM card slot compatible with 1.8V / 3V […]

MediaTek T750 5G Chipset to Power Fixed Wireless Access Routers and 5G Mobile Hotspots

Most of the 5G modem we covered are designed for mobile devices, but 5G technology also brings opportunities for fixed wireless access routers (FWA routers) potentially replacing fixed broadband modem routers, as well as for 5G mobile hotspots to add coverage in areas without reliable cellular signal. Those are the two markets targetted by the just-announced 7nm MediaTek T750 quad-core Arm processor with support for sub-6GHz frequencies aiming to affordable broadband connectivity to areas with limited DSL, cable, or fiber services, or on the contrary adding wireless services in suburban, rural, and less developed areas. Mediatek T750 5G SoC highlights: Processor – Quad-core Arm Cortex-A55 CPU GPU / Display – Embedded GPU and display driver to support up to 720p displays Cellular Networking 5G NR FR1 modem with sub-6GHz frequencies support and two-component carrier aggregation (2CC CA) for extended coverage Standalone and non-standalone (SA/NSA) modes supported 5CC LTE carrier aggregation LAN Connectivity 2x  2.5Gbps SGMII interfaces for wired Ethernet networks […]

The Notch is Gone! ZTE Axon 20 5G Smartphone Features an Under-Display Camera

A little over a few ago, we reported companies like Xiaomi and Oppo were working on under-display cameras to remove the notch on smartphones. This works by having the phone display a black bar (that means transparent) above the camera while taking a photo, and reverting to normal display once the photo is taken or video is shot. At the time, picture quality left to be desired, so more work was needed, but the first phone with an under-display camera is now available for ZTE Axon 20 5G selling for 2,198 RMB (~$322) and up in China. ZTE Axon 20 5G specifications: SoC – Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G octa-core processor with 1x Kryo 475 Prime (Cortex-A76 class) @ 2.4GHz, 1x Kryo 475 Gold (Cortex-A76 class) @ 2.2GHz, 6x Kryo 475 Silver (Cortex-A55 class) @ 1.8GHz System Memory – 6 or 8GB RAM Storage – 128GB or 256GB flash MicroSD card slot (shared with one Nano SIM slot) Display – 6.92-inch’ FHD+ […]
