(Most of) FOSDEM 2015 Videos Are Now Online

FOSDEM 2015 took place on between the 31st of January and 1st of February, and while some sessions were not recorded on videos, most of them were, and the organizers are now slowly processing and uploading 402 videos to their server. So far 210 videos have been uploaded, including the Embedded Devroom. You can follow the upload status to check out when your preferred track/devroom sessions are uploaded. For example, “internet of things” videos have not been uploaded so far, so you’d need to be a bit more patient for this topic. One of such videos is “Upstream Allwinner ARM SoC (A10 / sunxi) support status”  by Hans de Goede, which includes the slides on the left and video of the right. This makes the presentation easy to follow (despite the slides being cropped), but probably explains why it takes so long to process the videos. http://video.fosdem.org/2015/devroom-embedded/allwinner_upstream__CROPPED_PRES.mp4 You can also […]

DV7810-T2 is a Quad Core DVB-T2 Android Receiver with a CA Slot, Conax and Novel-SuperTV Support

There are a few Android TV boxes on the market with digital tuners (DVB-T2, DVB-S2, ATSC..), such as WeTek Play or VideoStrong K1, but unless you install some “special” app like OSCAM, you’ll only be able to watch Free-to-air channels. Shenzhen SDMC Technology DV7810-T2 Android set-top box adds a conditional access smartcard slot to work with the built-in DVB-T2 tuner. DV7810-T2 specifications: SoC – Amlogic S812 quad core Cortex A9 processor @ 2.0GHz with an octa core Mali-450MP6 GPU System Memory – 2GB DDR3 (1GB optional) Storage – 8GB NAND flash (Options: 4, 16 or 32GB), SD card slot Video Output – HDMI 1.4b, AV Audio Output – HDMI, AV, and optical S/PDIF Connectivity – 10/100/1000M Ethernet, 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi (dual band optional) with external antenna, and Bluetooth 4.0 Tuner – DVB-T / DVB-T2 Tuner (MXL608+AVL6762) with RF In and Out Conditional Access – CA smartcard slot. Aoluguya M1 Intel HDMI Stick Dual Boots Windows 8.1 and Android 4.4

When MeegoPad T01 was first unveiled, we were all promised an Intel PC in stick form factor that can dual boot Windows 8.1 and Android 4.4, but when the product and its competitors all ended up shipping with Windows 8.1 only. Since then people have managed to install Ubuntu (with caveats) and Android on Intel Atom Z3735F, but instructions may not be easy to follow for everybody. MINIX also launched NEO Z64A running Android 4.4, but so far, I had not seen any such devices actually shipping with a firmware that dual boots Windows 8.1 and Android 4.4. Aoluguya M1 TV Sticks claims to change that, as it ships with both operating systems. Aloguya M1 hardware specifications look quite similar to other Bay Trail TV sticks: SoC – Intel Atom Z3735F  “Bay Trail” quad core processor @ 1.33 GHz (Bust freq: 1.83 GHz) with Intel HD graphics Gen 7 (2W […]

Giveaway Week – Freescale SABRE Lite Development Board

Here’s a development board for a change. Freescale SABRE Lite is a board powered by Freescale i.MX 6Quad processor that I got during a giveaway organized on Element14…  It’s a great board for Linux development thanks to the extensive documentation released by Freescale. After writing a short unboxing and quick start guide post, I planned to try a few more things on the board, but as I ended up owning Wandboard Dual and Quad boards, the mbest made board ended up collecting dust, so it’s much better to give it to somebody who certainly make good use of it. The box will have most items shown above, except the serial NULL cable  which I keep for other experiments. The rules are the same as usual, simply leave a comment below to enter the draw. Other rules are as follows: Only one entry per contest. I will filter out entries with […]

Chromium OS Image for PopMetal Rockchip RK3288 Development Board

We’ve been teased about Chromium OS on Rockchip RK3288 about a year ago, and RK3288 kernel and Chromium overlay have also been available for nearly a year, but AFAIK there hasn’t been any Chromium OS firmware for any particurlar hardware, until yesterday, where Chipspark released a Chromium OS image for their PopMetal board. I haven’t been able to download the file yet, because the download speed is terrible, but you could download chromium_image.tar.gz to have a look. That could mean Rockchip RK3288 based Chrome OS devices may not be so far off now.

Embedded Systems Conference 2015 Schedule – May 6-7, 2015

The Embedded Systems Conference took the name “Design West” for a couple of years, but this year, there’s no mention of Design West, and the Embedded System Conference 2015 will take place in Boston, MA, US on May 6-7, 2015. The 2-day event will have a demo hall, and well as sessions divided into 8 tracks: Connected Devices and the IoT Embedded Software Design Hardware: Design, I/O and Interfacing Prototyping Embedded Systems Design Software: Design, Languages, & Quality Fantastical Theater Teardowns The full schedule has now been posted, and I’ll build a virtual schedule with some of the sessions provided. Wednesday May 6, 2015 8:00 – 8:45 – Understanding Google/Nest Thread by Michael Anderson, Chief Scientist, The PTR Group, Inc. The IoT will live or die based on its connectivity. In examining existing wireless protocols, Google/Nest found most of them lacking. In order to address the needs for low-power wireless […]
