XBMC Media Center Coming to Android

I’ve received a mysterious picture this morning without further details…

Zappy XBMC Mascot Gets a Makeover

After a little Google search, it appears XBMC has announced their progress on XBMC for Android.

There was already XBMC remote and thin client available on Google Play, but the latest announcement is the real deal, and XBMC can be launched on you Android based devices be it a set-top box, a tablet, a phone, or whatever… It will be the same user experience as on the desktop

Have a look at a short (and blurry) teaser video showing XBMC running in Android. “Big Buck Bunny” video is to media player what Angry Birds is to tablet, it has to be shown during demos…

XBMC developers explain that most devices only support software decode of audio and video for now, but expect on OpenMAX based player to eventually be available. The main development platform was a Pivos XIOS DS set-top-box based on AMLogic AM8726 processor (Single Core Cortex A9) and it is currently the only platform taking fully advantage of hardware acceleration, but my little finger tells me a lot of development has also gone into the Mele A1000, so all AllWinner A10 device owners might also be able to get a fully accelerated XBMC experience on Android in the near future.

XBMC 4 Android still need some polishing (e.g. redesigned UI for smartphones) and debugging before it can be released and pushed to Google Play, and they will be releasing apks to interested beta testers (cnxsoft is waiving his hand and the Mele A1000 is blinking its LEDs) in the coming weeks. The source code is available on github.

If you have a Pivos XIOS DS STB, you can visit the Pivos forums for questions and to get unofficial builds once available. If you don’t have one, and that makes you want to buy one, it’s available on Amazon for $114.90.

  1. awesome news, so what’s their plan regarding these mk802 A10 sticks? when they all gonna get some official xbmc love 🙂

  2. @cnxsoft thanks,

On a side note, I’ve posted few links of freescale i.mx6 quad core processor equipped tablet ($274) link in your other thread, with some additional links on some related info. In hope that you gonna do a compare post with exynos quad / tegra quad / freescale i.mx6 quad.

But that got stuch in moderation.
May be with too many links it looks like a marketing ploy. But trust me it’s not. 🙂

I’ve seen your i.mx6 table links, but I haven’t visited the sites yet, but will soon. I haven’t accepted the comment (nor deleted it) because it’s completely unrelated to ACE Cosy Compiler Framework…

Can you use the “Contact Us” page in the top menu ?

Btw, I’ve checked the links you provided, it’s interesting, but similar to what I wrote about YOOE F4 tablet (also i.MX6 quad), and the price is a little high. I hope to find cheaper quad core tablets, something below $200 (7″ screen) or below $250 (9.7 / 10″ screen).

  5. Contact Us = Ok

Yeah, I agree. The price point should be below $200. But I wanted to see a cpu/ gpu analyses of I.MX6 with tegra 3 and Exynos 4412 quad.

Is this imx6 is like Good Cpu clubbed with week gpu as of tegra3 or its similar to Exynos 4412 with quad mali 400 or with latest mali 450 etc.
