Intel Apollo Lake HDMI TV Sticks Are Starting to Sell for $100

Last April, we discovered an early prototype of BBen mini computer, an HDMI TV Stick based on Intel Celeron N3450 Apollo Lake processor that was supposed to start selling in July. It may have been delayed a little, but MeeGoPad T11 model is already listed on Alibaba, and ECDREAM A9 model on both Alibaba and Amazon US, where it is sold for $189 with free shipping (from China). Still no news from Intel’s own Apollo Lake Compute Sticks however, maybe they’ve canceled them… [Update: I’ve just found ECDREAM A9 for $99.99 on GeekBuying]

ECDREAM A9 “Chocolate Windows” PC stick specifications:

  • SoC
    • Intel Celeron N3350 dual core processor @ 1.1 GHz / 2.4 GHz, 12 EU Intel HD graphics 500 @ 200 MHz / 650 MHz; 6W TDP OR
    • Intel Celeron N3450 quad core processor @ 1.1 GHz / 2.2 GHz, 12 EU Intel HD graphics 500 @ 200 MHz / 700 MHz; 6W TDP
  • System Memory – 2, 4, or 8 GB DDR3
  • Storage – 32 or 64 GB eMMC flash + micro SD slot
  • Video & Audio Output – HDMI 1.4 male port

  • USB – 2x USB 3.0 ports
  • Misc – Ventilation holes, LED, power button
  • Power Supply – 5V/3A via micro USB port…
  • Dimensions & Weight – 128 x 58 x 16 mm;

The device comes with Windows 10, and ships with a 5V/3 power adapter, and a user’s manual. The product sold for $189 model on Amazon is the entry level model with Celeron N3350, 2GB RAM, 32GB flash. In case, you wonder whether such stick is fanless, the photo below should give a clue…

You’ll also find some more details on the product page, which strangely only show N3450 processor, not N3350.

  1. TV-“stick” widened to fit fan. Intel-style. They should make one to fit 200W PSU too. And water cooling.

  2. (Repost)

Who really uses these sticks, and where / in what use cases?

I can only think of situation where you a TV/monitor, but no laptop, and space and money is very scarce, and speed requirements are not very high…

  3. its good to see low cost Apollo lake devices hitting the market

2 USB 3 ports is good and there are plenty of vents for cooling

cant see any mention of 4gb and 8gb models

5v 3a is gonna struggle big time though i reckon

and yet another new no name chinese supplier with no history

I now use an intel baytrail tablet as desktop replacement with a monitor connected via hdmi, keyboard and mouse via bluetooth. Use cases: browsing, mailing, light programming at home. It has low power consumption (5V 2A Power Supply), and I just hate laptops. I am far sighted, so things with small(-ish) screens that are close to me and small fonts are not my friend (unless I put on reading glasses).

I also have a full desktop PC, but it has much higher power consumption (50 to 200 Watt), so I use it only for light gaming these days.

  5. At the price point that it is pitching at I expect that it may appeal for those looking for a cheap step up from Cherry trail and a leap from Baytrail.

Lots of vents to go with the fan.

5v/3a is probably going to be enough because with a TDP of only 6W, even if all slots and ports are occupied, you would be hard pushed to make this fall over power usage wise , even at max load.

As for why anybody would want to use a stick, it’s the same principle for anything small that saves space and weight.

  6. As with all mini devices, I am ultimately curious about how well — and how fast — this will be running Linux 🙂
