Intel Bay Trail Graphics Overview – FOSDEM 2014

Bay Trail SoCs are new low power Intel ICs for tablets (Bay Trail-T, Z3000 series), mobiles (Bay Trail-M, N2800, N2900 and N3500 series), desktops (Bay Trail-D, J1800, J1900 and J2900 series) and embedded / industrial platforms (Bay Trail-I, E3800 series). Many Atom processors used to features PowerVR GPU, but it has now been replaced by Intel HD graphics in Bay Trail SoC. Jesse Barnes, working at Intel on software and drivers for Intel graphics devices, gives a presentation about Bay Trail SoCs with a focus on graphics. After an overview, and some ARM bashing regarding performance (Nvidia Tegra 4 and Qualcomm Snapdragon 800), and even power consumption (Tegra 4 only), he describe further details about Intel HD graphics found in the new Intel processors. Everything is basically in mainline, and you’ll need Linux 3.10 or greater, Mesa 9.2 or greater, and libva 1.2.1 or greater for proper support. Some initial […]

Intel Bay Trail Z3700 Series Overview, Benchmarks, Hardware, Documentation and Linux Support

After seeing the discussion about ARM vs x86 (Bay trail) for the future Dragon Pyra open source game console, I’ve realized many people, including myself, do not know about the different resources available to develop hardware and software for Intel Bay Trail SoCs for tablets such as Atom Z3740 and Z3770, so I decided to have a look. Intel Atom Bay Trail Z3700 Series Overview Intel Z3600 series and Z3700 series are respectively dual core and quad core Bay Trail-T SoCs for Android and Windows 8 tablets. There are 4 quad core models: Z3740, Z3740D, Z3770, and Z3770D, and 2 dual core processors: Z3680 and Z3680D. The dual core versions are reserved for Android only, and there’s no product page on Intel for now, so I’ll focus this post on Z3700 series only. I have no idea what the “D” in Z3740D is for, except it;’s not related to Desktop, […]

Congatec has announced several computers-on-module (CoM) powered by Intel “Bay Trail” Celeron and Atom SoCs compliant with either QSeven (conga-QA3  CoM), or COM Express (conga-TCA3 CoM) standards to be used for embedded applications. conga-QA3 and conga-TCA3 specifications: SoC (Processor + Intel HD graphics + Chipset) Intel Atom E3845 (4 x 1.91 GHz, 2MB L2 cache, 10 W) Intel Atom E3827 (2 x 1.75 GHz, 1MB L2 cache, 8 W) Intel Atom E3826 (2 x 1.46 GHz, 1MB L2 cache, 7 W) Intel Atom E3825 (2 x 1.33 GHz, 1MB L2 cache, 6 W) Intel Atom E3815 (1.46 GHz, 512kB L2 cache, 5 W) Intel Celeron N2920 (4 x 1.86 GHz, 2MB L2 cache, 7.5 W) Intel Celeron J1900 (4 x 2 GHz, 2MB L2 cache, 10 W) System Memory conga-QA3 – Up to 8 GB onboard DDR3L 1333 MT/s conga-TCA3 – 2x SO-DIMM sockets for DDR3L memory modules up to […]

Wibtek TJ1800G & TJ1900G “Thin mini-ITX” Boards with Bay Trail-D Processors for DIY All-in-One Computers and mini PCs

Intel has made great progress in the low cost low power computer space thanks to Bay Trail based mini-ITX motherboards such as MSI J1800i and BIOSTAR J1800NH both with an Intel Celeron J1800 processor (10 W TDP) and selling for around $60, or the latest Intel NUC mini PC selling for $140 with a 7.5W TDP Celeron N2820. One of the requirements of mini-ITX specifications suggest boards to feature 20- or 24-pin “original ATX” power connectors, which requires a an ATX PSU, and adds to costs. One reader pointed out that another type of mini ITX boards dubbed “thin mini-ITX” do not require an ATX power supply, and could be powered by a standard 12V power supply just like Intel NUC. Thin mini-ITX Standard Thin mini-ITX has been defined by Intel a couple of years ago, and target the DIY market for All-in-One PC where you can buy an AIO […]

BIOSTAR J1800NH mini-ITX Motherboard with Celeron J1800 Processor Sells for $56

Many people got interested in my post about MSI J1800i Motherboard because it was one of the first motherboard based on a low power Intel Bay Trail-D processor, namely Celeron J1800 dual core processor with 10W TDP, and the $60 price tag. However, I and others had doubt about the price, because Intel listed Celeron J1800 recommended price at $72, and that’s just the price for the CPU. I still can’t find site selling MSI J1800i in US dollars, although I could find for 66.90 GBP and 69.99 Euros on some European websites. You can really convert it into US dollars using the current exchange rate, as you have to take into account VAT and taxes. But today Fanless Tech has reported about two new motherboards based on Celeron J1800: Gigabyte J1800N-D2H, and BIOSTAR J1800NH. I could not find price for the Gigabyte motherboard, but BIOSTAR J1800NH is sold for […]

Asus ZenFone Android Smartphones Powered by Intel Atom CPU to Sell for as Low as $99
