Microsoft is Giving Away Intel Galileo Arduino Compatible Boards to Developers

Microsoft has already launched several initiatives to reach the maker movement and app developers with .NET Gadgeteer supported by platform like Bambino 200, as well as Intel Shark Cove development board for Windows development. The company has now launched a website called where they currently have a signup page for developers to send a kit based on Intel Galileo, an Arduino compatible board powered by Intel Quark processor.

Intel_Galileo_Windows_EmbeddedThere’s currently very little information on the software and documentation part of the development kit, but there are links to Visual Studio Express, Windows Embedded’s Internet of Things page, and a link to Maker Faire, so it gives what the kit will be for.

Apparently they’ll send the kit to selected candidate whether “you are an experienced Windows developer looking to jump into the Internet of Things or you are new to Windows development and want to build the next big thing”.

The initial form is pretty simple. They’ll ask for minimal personal details, whether you have Windows programming experience or not, the programming languages you are familiar with (C, C++, JavaScript, C#, Python…), and if you’ve ever used a Raspberry Pi, Beaglebone Black, Spark IO or Arduino. You’ll then receive another email to fill your address, and some informations about your expected project. Click OK, and you’ll soon receive an email reading:

<insert_name_here> ,

Thank you for signing up for the Windows Developer Program for IoT. We’ll let you know when your kit has shipped.

Thank you,
Microsoft IoT Team.

So I’m not sure there’s even a thorough selection process…

  1. It’s cheaper to give them away than to bury them in the desert like the ET Atari games

  2. I have nearly finished the port for openwrt, but I think anything linux related is not interesting for Microsoft.

In any case, Intel boards are way too expensive compared to ARM/MIPS ones.

I’ve read on some other websites, that gmail / hotmail / yahoo email addresses may not work.
Another rumor I’ve read is that if a site brings too many entries, it may be blacklisted, so instead of clicking on the link, you may want to copy / paste it.

  4. Registered, received 2nd mail informing me that they will let me know when my kit is shipped 🙂

And true, first time when I tried with my gmaill address, I didn’t get first mail either.

  5. “Thank you for signing up for the Windows Developer Program for IoT. We’ll let you know when we have more to share.”

🙁 They are all gone for now… wonder how many they gave away…

  6. I got the email “we’ll let you know when your kit has shipped”

any ideas on how long that will be. its already been a week and a half.

  7. It was a useless campaign, didn’t matter what “proper” non-free email I used there was no response. Perhaps it was an IQ test, those that used their junkmail addresses succeeded but those that used real non microsoft fanboy addresses missed out!

  8. @Rick
Just wait and see…. domain is registered to Microsoft Corporation, so should be legit. If they do nothing with that, we can press charges against them for collecting personal information for commercial use 🙂

  9. Well it looks like it shipped for me:

    Congratulations Carlos Vargas!

  10. Nitin,

Congratulations, it’s great to hear that, you can start your prototyping….

PS. No news for me still 🙁

  11. I am informed that all the boards are shipped, if we cannot get the tracking number, that means we would not get the board. 🙁

    Bad news~~~
