Intel Introduces Thunderbolt 4, Showcases MultiPort Thunderbolt 4 Docks

Thunderbolt 4 Docks

Intel has just introduced Thunderbolt 4 universal cable connectivity solution for data, video, and power with up to 40 Gbps bandwidth, and USB4 specification compliance. The new standard can support up to four Thunderbolt ports in docks and universal cables up to 2 meters in length. Compared to Thunderbolt 3, Thunderbolt 4 doubles the minimum video and data requirements leading to support for two 4K displays or one 8K display, and PCIe storage speeds up to 3,000 Mbps. It also enables PC charging on at least one computer port and allows you to wake your computer from sleep by touching the keyboard or mouse when connected to a Thunderbolt dock. It also adds mandatory Intel VT-d-based direct memory access (DMA) protection to helps prevent physical DMA attacks. The first processors to integrate Thunderbolt 4 will be “Tiger Lake” mobile processors, and the company also announced the Thunderbolt 4 controller 8000 […]

USB4 Specification Released, Up to 40 Gbps Data Transfer Rate Supported

USB4 Specification

USB 3.2 was announced about two years ago with speeds of up to 20 Gbps using existing USB 3.1 Gen 2 USB-C cables, but the USB Implementers Forum has done a bit work more and just released the USB4 specification allowing twice the speed at 40 Gbps. The USB4 architecture leverages the Thunderbolt protocol specification that was recently contributed by Intel Corporation to the USB Promoter Group, enables the faster data rate, as well as multiple simultaneous data and display protocols. Highlights of USB4 standard Two-lane operation using existing USB Type-C cables and up to 40Gbps operation over 40Gbps certified cables Multiple data and display protocols that share the maximum aggregate bandwidth Backward compatibility with USB 3.2, USB 2.0 and Thunderbolt 3 Up to 100 Watts power delivery Both USB 3.2 and USB4 require USB-C cables to make use of the maximum transfer rate, so traditional USB cables may fade […]

Intel NUC Roadmap 2018 – 2019 – Gemini Lake, Coffee Lake, and Kaby Lake H

Intel’s new generation of Gemini Lake and Coffee Lake processors is expected to launch at the end of this year, beginning of next, and this morning I received Intel’s NUC roadmap that gives a good idea of what’s coming in 2018 and 2019. Intel plans a whole new generation of NUCs from “Hades Canyon VR” NUCxi7HVK model with a 100W Intel Core i7-xxxxK Kaby Lake-H processor to “June Canyon Celeron” NUC7CJYH model with a 10W Intel Celeron J4005 dual core “Gemini Lake” processor. All in all a total of 7 new NUCs should be launching in 2018. Let’s have a closer look at the cheaper and lower power Gemini Lake models, starting with “June Canyon Celeron” NUC7CJYH specifications: SoC – Intel Celeron J4005 dual core GLK processor (10W TDP) System Memory – 2x DDR4-2400 slots for up to 8GB RAM Storage – M.2 SSD slot, SDXC slot Display – 2x […]

Intel To Make Thunderbolt 3 Royalty-free, Release Specifications

Intel Thunderbolt 3 is a single port connect that supports multiple standards (Thunderbolt, USB 3.1, DisplayPort, PCIe), leverages USB-C connector, and offers up to 40 Gbps throughput. So far, it’s mostly found in higher end computers and laptops, but Intel has now announced plans to make it royalty-free, and “release the  specifications to the industry” (so maybe not completely free/public) in order to increase adoption of the standard. Thunderbolt-3 main features: Thunderbolt, USB, DisplayPort, and power on USB-C USB-C connector and cables (small, reversible) 40 Gbps Thunderbolt 3 – double the speed of Thunderbolt 2 Bi-directional, dual-protocol (PCI Express and DisplayPort) 4 lanes of PCI Express Gen 3 8 lanes of DisplayPort 1.2 (HBR2 and MST) Supports two 4K displays (4096 x 2160 30bpp @ 60 Hz) USB 3.1 (10 Gbps) – compatible with existing USB devices and cables DisplayPort 1.2 – compatible with existing DisplayPort displays, devices, and cables […]
