Open hardware Raspberry Pi Pico VGA, SD Card, and Audio demo board to support QVGA video playback

Abhishek recently posted an overview of Raspberry Pi RP2040’s two PIO blocks with examples in C and Micropython using some PIO assembler code. He used some basic examples like blinking an LED, but the Raspberry Pi Foundation also mentioned the programmable IO could be used to drive a VGA display, read and write data from a MicroSD card at reasonable speeds, and so on. However, the Raspberry Pi Pico does not have any of those interfaces, and it would be nice to have a board that does. It turns out there’s such a board in “Chapter 3. The VGA, SD Card & Audio Demo board for Raspberry Pi Pico” of  “Hardware Design with RP2040.pdf” document. It will be sold as the “Pimoroni Pico VGA Demo Base” board for 19.50 GBP inc. VAT (about $22 US ex. VAT), but since the KiCad hardware files are open-source, I’d assume other companies may […]

Faytech 15″ to 17″ Capacitive Touch PCs Ship with Ubuntu 16.04

Faytech Ubuntu Touch PC

Although many can support Ubuntu or other Linux distributions, most Intel based products ship with some version of Windows by default, and the end users may have to install Linux by themselves. While watching a Computex 2018 video on Armdevices.net, I found out FayTech, a company specializing in  the design, development, manufacturing and marketing of touchscreen monitors & PCs, showed a 15″ Touch PC powered by an Intel Celeron J1900 “Bay Trail” processor and running Ubuntu 16.04 LTS. So I had a look on the company website, and the 15″ capacitive touch PC (FT15J1900W4G64GCAP) showcased in the video – embedded at the end of this article – comes with the following key features and specifications: SoC – Intel Celeron J1900 quad core processor @ 2.0 / 2.4 GHz with Intel HD Graphics; 10W TDP System Memory – 4GB DDR3L-1333 via 1x SO-DIMM slot, expandable to 8GB Storage – Industrial 64GB […]

$400 UGEE UG-2150 21.5″ Drawing Monitor Comes with a 2048-Level Pressure Sensitivity Pen

UG-2150 Drawing Monitor

A few weeks ago, I wrote about a 7″ HDMI touchscreen display, and today when I first come across UGEE UG-2150 monitor, I thought I had found something similar but with a bigger display size. However, the 21.5″ monitor has a different target applications, and is specifically designed for drawing as it ships with a 2048-level pressure sensitivity stylus. UGEE UG-2150 monitor specifications: Display Resolution – 1920 x 1080 Colors – 16.7M Drawing / touch Pressure Sensitivity – 2048 levels Accuracy – 0.25 mm Report Rate – 220 reports/per second Response Time – 14ms Video Input – VGA, DVI, HDMI USB – 1x USB 2.0 port Power Supply – Yes… Dimensions Full device – 517x 321.89 x 30mm excluding the stand Active Area – 476.64 x 268.11mm The monitor ships with a P50S rechargeable pen, two pen holders, 8 different tips, a remove ring, a USB cable, a power adapter […]

Extend VGA or HDMI Signals over “Ethernet” with VGA / HDMI Extender over Cat5/Cat6 Cables

Ethernet VGA Extender Kit

A host computer or media player may not always be in the same room as its display(s), for example for digital signage where you may want to have several displays controlled by one computer in different rooms, or if you want to add a display to one of your room without necessarily adding another TV box or set-top box. We’ve already seen solution to extend the video signals over a few hundred meters using a HDMI powerline extender or wireless AV transmitted / receiver kit. The former is rather expensive (~$250) and the latter only works with composite. Today, I’ve come across other video extender solutions relying on Cat5/Cat6 “Ethernet” cables, first with an Ethernet to VGA extender kit that sells for $12.99 shipped on Banggood, but there are also Ethernet to HDMI solutions for around $25 to $40 offering a range of up to 120 meters over Ethernet. Both […]

NovaVGA Shield Adds VGA Output to Arduino Boards

Arduino boards are convenient to control I/Os, link LEDs, and display info on small LCD displays, but if you want to output data to a larger monitor, it’s a bit more complex. NovaVGA shield for Arduino simplify the task of outputting data to a VGA monitor over SPI. NovaVGA shield hardware specifications: CPLD – Xilinx XC9572XL CPLD, user programmable via JTAG interface. SRAM Framebuffer – 160×120 pixels @ 6-bit color (2^6 = 64 possible colors) VGA Output – 640×480 @ 60Hz physical resolution (25.175MHz pixel clock) Interface with MCU – SPI mode 1 interface (consumes only three Arduino pins) Header pins not included MicroNova provides an Arduino library with various examples such as color palette, Mandelbrot, Tetris and text console, as well as a user’s guide and PDF schematics that can all be downloaded directly on the product page. NovaVGA shield sells for $29 on Tindie or directly on MicroNova […]

VGA Output Hack on $2 PADI IoT Stamp & Other Realtek RTL8710AF Modules

It’s pretty amazing what you can do with those cheap WiFi modules coming from Espressif and Realtek. You may remember CNLohr getting ESP8266 to broadcast video to your TV though NTSC, and that was impressive. But developer kissste, who has been very active since the announcement of a $2 Realtek RTL8710 module, has now developed a VGA driver demo for Realtek Ameba WiFi SoCs, and successfully tested it on Pine64 PADI IoT Stamp. Just like on ESP8266, there’s no hardware display block on RTL8710AF, RTL8711AF, and RTL8195AF SoCs, so instead he had to connect the signals to GPIOs with the video signal connected to GA1 via a resistor, H-Sync to GC2, and V-Sync to GA5. Video and H-Sync data is actually transfered over an SPI connection using DMA transfer for better performance. Normally the video signal for VGA is divided into red, green, and blue signal, so I understand he mixed […]

MeLE Star Cloud PCG60 Plus Cherry Trail Mini PC Comes with HDMI and VGA Outputs, Gigabit Ethernet and More

Most Cherry Trail mini PCs on the market features only one video interface, usually HDMI, and only support 10/100M Ethernet. After introducing MeLE PCG03 Plus a few months ago, MeLE is about to launch a new Cherry Trail mini PC called Start Cloud PCG60 Plus that includes both HDMI and VGA video output, two USB 2.0, but also faster networking thanks to Gigabit Ethernet and 802.11ac.
