Telechips Releases Linux Kernel 3.0.8 and Android ICS Source Code

Telechips has just uploaded the GPL source code for kernel 3.0.8 and Android 4.0 to the open source section of their website.

If downloading from telechips website is too slow, you can also try alternate downloads (Thanks Gabe!):

I’ve also created 2 repositories in github:

It haven’t looked into the source code in details yet, but hopefully, this will allow developers to customize the firmware running on Telechips TCC8925 based mini PCs such as CX-01 mini Android TV Box or Zero Devices Z900.

I like to think it’s because I emailed them a few weeks ago…
More seriously, it seems they usually release the open source code, but I did not expect them to release it so early.

The Android part is limited, but there’s the OpenMAX code which may be interesting for XBMC for Android. If that’s usable, then we may be able to get a proper XBMC Box with hardware video decoding for $40 (Group Buy price), which would be disruptive. The Raspberry Pi supports XBMC, but AFAIK the supported video codecs are limited.

Hmm, I heard from someone, Telechips also did not utilizing OMX and therefor hardware decoding would not be available anytime soon.

I guess, XBMC development will look at OMX next as it is kind of a standard.
