Variscite VAR-SOM-MX6 Freescale i.MX 6 Solo, Dual and Quad System on Modules Start at $59

Variscite has unveiled a new series of system on modules powered by Freescale i.MX6 Solo, Dual, DualLite and Quad processors with 512 to 2048 MB DDR3 RAM, and 128 to 1024MB SLC NAND Flash.

Here are the modules key features:

  • SoC – Freescale i.MX 6 series SoC (Single/Dual /Quad ARM® Cortex™-A9 Core, 1.2 Ghz)
  • System Memory • Up to 16 Gb DDR3 RAM
  • Storage – Up to 8 Gb NAND Flash for storage memory/boot
  • Video Output:
    • 2 x LVDS display interface
    • HDMI V1.4 i nterface
    • 1 x MIPI DSI
  • Touch panel interface
  • Camera – Parallel & serial camera interface (CSI)
  • Connectivity
    • On-board 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet PHY

The company provides Linux kernel 3.0.35, Windows Embedded Compact 7 and Android 4.03 (ICS) for the boards. Datasheets for the SoM and the “custom board” (Carrier board for VAR-SOM-MX6 V1.0), schematics for the carrier board, and 3D and DXF mechanical drawings for the modules are available on Variscite website.

  1. Looks interesting. Nice set of I/O capabilities.

    but, then again do we have to buy the carrier board for the module itself? Or is it included in the price (which starts from $59)?

    I have just sent a request to their sales team for a quote for the same.

    Yeah, looks so.

    Well, if the module & its carrier board with i.MX6 Quad 1.0/1.2ghz, 1GB DDR3 RAM, 1GB NAND comes for less than $150. (ethernet(gigabit or otherwise), Wifi, BT are there on every solo/dual/lite & quad variants of i.MX6 so no worries)

    am sooo..buying this! 😀

  4. Variscite does a good stuff, but after talking with their Russian SMM guy (horrible person, cant take critisism at all, by the way, jAN, if you are reading this – leave your job, you already lost one client for your company) – I encountered many issues with them.

    First is obviously zero support for single buyers (like me) plus incredible pricing. $59 is price for mass production unit, guess the price for standalone developers/enthusiasts. I dont clearly remember, this was a year or more ago, but TI devkit (module + motherboard) was around $350 or something. Clearly we have better solutions on the market.

    Second problem is “Sources files and build instructions for Linux package can be download from Variscite FTP. Contact email_here for FTP credentials.” (link – isnt this direct GPL violation? They obviously will not give anyone permission to see how well they did the linux job without purchasing their stuff first. Compare this with, for example, Boundary Devices having just open github repo and ton of users around the world.

    I’m not up for wasting money and then having time of headache of fixing the manufacturer linux support if it is broken enough.

    P.S.: Sorry for a rant.

    Just to comment on the GPL issue. I’ve always understood they need to provide the source if you have the binary (e.g. if you bought a device, you have the binary in the flash). Commercial Linux distributions (e.g. montavista) charge before you can access the services and sources, and this seems legal. Of course, I prefer the way Boundary devices operate, but I don’t think Variscite breaks the GPL. I can’t comment about their customer service however.

  6. The company has now added a an NXP’s i.MX 6QuadPlus processor version of their VAR-SOM-MX6 SoM.
    It’s pin-to-pin compatible, and should deliver up to 50% enhanced GPU and DDR performance:
