Project Ara Modular Phone Update

The modular phone concept started with PhoneBloks, whose founders shortly got to work with Motorola Project Ara, and since Google bought parts of Motorola, the concept is now part a Google’s project. Project Ara Developers Conference 2015 has taken place yesterday in California, but if you’ve missed it, another one is planned in Singapore on January 21, and it will also be live-streamed. We’ve now got a bit more information, a neat video has been uploaded to YouTube showing how a battery, a (broken) display, speakers, and camera modules would slide into the phone, and a pilot project has started in Puerto Rico. Google has very recently shipped Spiral 2 developer hardware enable prototyping and development of modules for the Ara platform. UTStarcom MC8718 is a Funny Looking Tegra K1 Based Android Game Console

An article about a Mediatek MT8685 based Android media player on AndroidPC.es, made me look into UTStarcom products, and beside some other MT8685 based quad core set-top boxes such as MC8685A and MC8685B, I found a weird/funny/intriguing/futuristic looking game console STB powered by Nvidia Tegra K1 quad core cortex A15 processor named MC8718. Patchsets for Nvidia Tegra K1 “Denver” Submitted to Linux Mainline

Some patchsets have been submitted for Nvidia Tegra 132 a few days ago to the Linux ARM Kernel mailing list. Tegra 132 is the codename for the 64-bit version of Tegra K1, and they’re also a mention of Norrin64 FFD board, that should be a Chromebook reference design.

Tegra114 and Tegra124 are the codename for Tegra K1 32-bit processor with Tegra124 clocked at a higher frequency. Norrin64 board dts does not seem included in the patchsets, but it’s available from Chromium OS code, and shows it’s using 2GB RAM too. That also means Chrombooks like Acer Chromebook 13 (CB5) or  HP Chromebook 14 with the 32-bit version of the Tegra K1 might soon get an upgrade to the 64-bit version. Thanks to David for the tip. PC Partner N258N1-F is a Linux mini PC Powered by Nvidia Tegra K1 Processor

Nvidia has done a great job porting Linux to their Tegra K1, and it’s one of the only ARM processor with a GPU supporting OpenGL, which helps a great deal with Unity for example. Nexus 9 supports Ubuntu (somewhat), and platforms like Jetson TK1 board are suitable to developers, but as I and others wondered why nobody ever made a Tegra K1 mini PC, I’ve been informed that such device existed already with PC Partner’s N258N1-F mini PC. Snail Games OBox is an Upcoming High End Android Game Console Powered by Nvidia Tegra K1 Processor

Snail Games is a gaming company based in Suzhou, China, with a branch in the US, specializing online games with over 85 million account on sites like woniu.com for the Chinese market, and playsnail.com for the North American market. Snail is now planning to launch an Android 4.4 console called OBox Online at CES 2015. Internally, the gaming console is comprised of a motherboard, a processor board, an HDD board, and an optional multi-media board. Two processor board are currently available with variants of Nvidia Tegra K1 quad core 32-bit processor, and I assume it should be possible to upgrade the console with a more powerful processor and more memory in the future. How to Install Ubuntu ARM64 on Nexus 9 Tablet

HTC Nexus 9 is one of the first 64-bit ARM platform with powerful ARMv8 cores (e.g. not Cortex A53) that both commercially available, and relatively affordable at $399 to $599, at least significantly cheaper than the server boards such as Applied Micro X-C1. The tablet comes with Android 5.0 Lollipop, but for those of you who wish to have an ARM64 platform running Ubuntu or other 64-bit Linux operating systems, Ubuntu installation instructions provided by Ryan Houdek, Dolphin emulator developer, might come handy, especially it won’t affect your Android installation provided you have already unlocked your bootloader. Android 5.0 Lollipop Coming to Allwinner A33 & A80, Rockchip RK3288, and More…

I can often see questions requesting whether SoC XYZ will support Android 5.0 Lollipop. The good news is that last week, I’ve read lots of news about Android 5.0 support on various devices including Nvidia Shield tablet, Motorola G & X smartphones, and of course the Google Nexus devices. A developer (Nanik T.) also ported Android Lollipop to ODROID U3 development board based on Exynos 4412, and he mentioned that “porting was pretty straight forward as KK and 5.0 does not have a lot of differences in terms of HAL”, which means there’s hope for more recent devices and SoCs getting the update. Chinese SoC vendors are also getting the word out that they are working on Android 5.0.
