Ziilabs MandelMark Benchmark Shows ZMS-40 GPU Compute Performance is 18 Times Faster than Nvidia Tegra 3

Ziilabs released comparative GPU compute benchmark results for its ZMS-40 stem cells processor and made available its MandelMark floating point benchmark for Android 4.0 as an apk file.

Since Ziilabs is using its own benchmark tool, which they released as a binary but did not open source, the results should be taken with a grain of salt. GPU Compute (aka GPGPU – General Purpose computing on GPU) is a technique to use the GPU to perform complex calculations usually performed by the CPU. MandelMark benchmark visualizes the solutions to the Mandelbrot to measure the floating point performance of mobile processors.

Ziilabs compared their ZMS-40 Quad Core Cortex A9 processor with 96 stemcell cores to the following competitors:

  • IPAD 3 – Apple A5X processor with a quad-core PowerVR SGX543MP4 GPU
  • Galaxy Tab 7+ – Samsung Exynos 4210 processor with a quad-core ARM Mali-400 GPU
  • Galaxy Nexus – TI OMAP 4460 processor with a PowerVR SGX540 GPU
  • Transformer Prime – Nvidia Tegra 3 processor with an ULP GeForce GPU

and tada ! Here are the amazing results…

Maldelbrot GPU compute benchmark results.
Ziilabs MandelMark ZMS-40 vs Apple A5x vs Exynos-4210 vs OMAP 4460 vs Tegra-3

For this particular benchmark, Ziilabs ZMS-40 beats Apple A5X by a little less than 2 times, Samsung Exynos 4210 by over 3 times, TI OMAP 4 by about 5 times and it is 18 times faster than Nvidia Tegra 3.

This benchmark only shows floating point operation performance and would only be able to improve the performance of specific applications such as signal and image processing, audio effects, video editing, physics and modelling, and I suppose few Android applications currently take advantage of GPU compute.

If you want to try it on your Android 4.0 device (earlier Android version are not supported), you can download Mandelmark 1.20 free of charge.

This is what the benchmark looks like.

You can visit Ziilabs MandelBrot page for further details on how their benchmark works.

Thanks for the test. If I’m not mistaken your CPU is Exynos 3310 with a PowerVR SGX540 @ 200 MHz, the same GPU as TI OMAP4460 except the latter is clocked @ 384 MHz. I’m guessing you might get around 1 MPixel/Sec. Does the benchmark show that?
