Teradici Announces PCoIP Tera2 Host and Zero Client Processors

Earlier this year, I discovered PCoIP (PC over IP) , a remote desktop protocol that provides basically the same functionality as VNC or RDP, but promises better performance on low end hardware by using different compression methods depending on the content on the display. Teradici, the company behind this technology, has today announced its next-generation Tera2 processors specifically designed to handle PCoIP by hardware:

  • TERA2220 dual display host processor – 150 Mpps (Megapixels per seconds), supports up to two displays at 1920×1200 resolution, or one at 2560×1600.
  • TERA2240 quad display host processor – 300 Mpps, supports up to four displays at 1920×1200 resolution, or two at 2560×1600.
  • TERA2321 dual display zero client processor
  • TERA2140 quad display zero client processor

Both Tera2 host processors include advanced security features such as AES-256 and NSA Suite B security protocols, and are capable of refreshing the full display at up to 60fps.

Tera2 PCoIP zero client features include:

  • DisplayPort added to existing DVI and VGA interfaces with up to 2560×1600 resolution and 30” monitor support.
  • Up to five times the VDI pixel performance over the previous generation zero client.
  • 6W of typical system power.
  • New quad display zero client support with VMware View.
  • Faster USB 2.0 transfer rates.
  • Reduced bandwidth with client-side caching and enhanced compression.
  • Full power management with Wake-on-LAN support.
  • Smaller, more integrated processor enables compact zero client form factors.
  • Stronger AES256-bit encryption.
  • Support for upcoming unified communications voice over IP solutions.
  • Additional smart card support and other new features included in the latest PCoIP Firmware and Management Console release.
  • Broker connectivity to virtual desktops or remote workstation hosts using VMware View Manager.

The way it basically works is that cards featuring host processors are plugged into servers in a datacenter and PCoIP zero clients can connect remotely to be used as Windows or Linux workstations.

Teradici said that Tera2 PCoIP zero clients will soon be available from OEM vendors and the company will demonstrated its zero clients at VMworld 2012, on  August 26-30 in San Francisco. You can find more information on Teradici zero client and workstation solutions pages
