My love for modular power supply design can not be denied. I find it cool, how you can increase the functionality of relative less powerful device just by adding another device on top or connected to it. With the explosion of the Arduino shields, the Raspberry Pi HaTs, I must say hardware modular design will surely be here for a long time.
An interesting modular product discovered on SeeedStudio is the MDP-XP Smart Digital Power Supply Kit. This product is a new product carried by Seeedstudio as it can be seen on the front page, and it is an interesting product indeed.
The MDP-XP known as Mini Digital Power System is a system of programmable linear DC power supply inheriting the modular design concept where you can enhance the basic functionality of the device. It is a cost-effective DC power supply, featuring indicators, stability, reliability and distinct user interface comparable with professional power supplies
Its modular design allows it to connect different modules for use together depending on your application.
The MDP-XP is expected to come with the following modules:
- MDP-M01 Display Control Module
- MDP-P905 Digital Power Module
- Digital Signal Generator Module
- Electronic Load Module
- Power Charger Module
- Battery Pack Module
Currently, only the Display Control Module and Digital Power Module is available for the supply kit, and the others are in development. Modularity interconnection is possible through a 2.4G wireless connection, capable of achieving multichannel free combination at the power of 90W per channel.
MDP-XP is capable of providing the following:
- Programmable output
- Timing output
- Sequential Control
- Automatic Compensation
- and others.
The Display Control Module is equipped with a 2.8-inch TFT screen, making it look like a mini oscilloscope. It can display the voltage-current waveform in real-time, support data statistics, and automatically pair with and control six sub-modules (digital power modules), with dual thumb wheels and 90-degree scrolling user-friendly design.
The Digital Power Module is able to give a super clean linear output, a 0.25mV ripple wave, high-speed transient response (4uS), and supporting precise fine-tuning. It can accept a DC input between 4.2V and 30V, which is reduced up to 2.7V after startup.
The device has been designed with protections like input overvoltage, under-voltage protection, anti-reverse connection protection, anti-backflow protection, overtemperature protection, and over-current protection
