Earlier this month, we checked the specifications and did an unboxing of the Sermoon S1 high-end 3D scanner with support for blue laser and infrared scanning. I had some concerns about my host machines due to the fairly high minimum requirements: Intel Core i7 Gen7 CPU, NVIDIA GPU (6GB VRAM), 16GB RAM, Windows 10/11 (64-bit). I had planned to use an ASUS Vivobook 16 laptop with a 13th Gen Intel Core i5-13500H SoC with a 12-core Raptor Lake processor and integrated Intel Iris Xe Graphics, as well as 16GB of RAM to run Creality Scan 4 software. After talking with Creality, it was confirmed to me that a “dedicated graphics card” was required. I have some good and bad news. The good news is that I might get a mini PC with an NVIDIA RTX 5060 Ti (16GB) external GPU for review. The bad news is that I have to […]
Creality Sermoon S1 high-end 3D scanner review – Part 1: specifications and unboxing
Creality has sent me the Sermoon S1 high-end 3D scanner for review. It supports blue laser line and infrared structured light scanning, offers high accuracy up to 0.02mm, scans objects from 5 x 5 x 5 m3 to 4000 x 4000 x 4000 mm3, and looks like a pretty cool device overall. I’ll start the review by diving into the specifications, before going through an unboxing to check out the 3D scanner and its accessories. I’ll then need to study a bit more before testing out with different objects in the second part of the review. Sermoon S1 3D scanner specifications Scanning Modes Blue laser lines Single Blue Laser Line Scanning rate: 108,000 measurements/s Working distance – 200 to 600mm Outdoor Scanning – Below 100,000 lux Laser Safety – Class II (eye safe) 7 Parallel Blue Laser Lines Scanning rate: 756,000 measurements/s Working distance – 150 to 400mm Outdoor Scanning […]

Creality RaptorX is a high-end portable wireless 3D scanner with 41 blue laser lines and NIR scanning (Sponsored)
Creality RaptorX is the world’s first wireless 3D scanner supporting 41 blue laser lines and NIR scanning. The high-end 3D scanner adds WiFi 6 connectivity compared to the earlier Creality CR-Scan Raptor 3D scanner along with much higher accuracy and other features. The new RaptorX 3D scanner features 41 blue laser lines (34 cross laser lines and 7 parallel laser lines) and infrared structure light (NIR). The 34 cross laser lines are used to scan large objects quickly, while the 7 parallel laser lines scan fine details with a resolution down to 0.02mm. The laser also implements a unique face & body algorithm to capture the human body scan more accurately and much faster (as quick as 2 minutes). The RaptorX is capable of scanning tiny objects fitting into a 5mm cube up to larger pieces within a 4000 x 4000 x 4000mm volume. You’ll find other technical details in […]

Review of Creality Ender-3 S1 Pro 2-in-1 3D printer & laser engraver – Part 1: Unboxing and assembly
Creality Ender-3 S1 Pro is a 3D printer that can be converted into a laser engraver thanks to a choice of 1.6W, 5W, and 10W laser modules, making it in theory a space-saving machine that can print 3D objects and engrave & cut materials. The company sent me a full kit with a 10W laser module, so after looking at the 3D printer’s specifications, I’ll check the various packages, and report my experience assembling the 3D printer, and then converting it into a laser engraver in this article, before actually testing both functions in the second part of the review. Since Karl reviewed the Ender-3 Pro 3D printer over two years ago, I asked about the difference and was told the new model got various improvements such as a direct extruder, CR-Touch auto bed-leveling, and support for high-temperature printing. Creality Ender-3 S1 Pro specifications Technology – FDM Maximum printing volume […]
Ender 3 Pro 3D printer in late 2020 – Build and first prints
Karl here. How does the Ender 3 Pro 3D printer stand up in late 2020? The short answer is pretty well. With just a few minor gripes it is a solid printer. According to All3dp the Ender 3 Pro came out in September 2018. Over 2 years ago. It is the successor to the most popular 3D printer: the Ender 3. I usually don’t do any research so I won’t be influenced by other reviewers but I did in this case so I could see what the differences are between the Ender 3 and Pro versions. It has been upgraded to a Meanwell power supply. Better mainboard layout. Wider extrusion for the bed to ride on, which should make the bed more stable. If you have done any research on 3D printers I would say it is impossible not to have heard about the Ender 3. With its low price, […]
Open Source ESP32 3D Printer Board Supports Marlin 2.0 Firmware
Espressif ESP32 processor was initially designed for cost-sensitive IoT projects thanks to its built-in WiFi & Bluetooth connectivity and low price, but the WiSoC’s fairly powerful two Xtensa cores found other uses such as face detection and audio applications among others. But a few people are now collaborating to bring ESP32 to the world of 3D printers with an open source hardware RepRap 3D printer controller board that has beta support in Marlin 2.0 RC1 firmware. There’s no commercially available ESP32 3D printer controller board right now, so only prototypes from the community are available. There are mainly two version of the boards: R1 and R2 designed by Simon Jouet, and at least one member – Felixstorm – made his own R2 board from the MIT licensed KiCad based design. R2 is a better design leveraging ESP32’s I2S interface to have more output pins and improve stepping. Felixstorm connected the […]
