Google Nexus 7 Android 4.1 Tablet Features Nvidia Tegra 3 Processor

Google announced their very first tablet at Google I/O called Google Nexus 7 (but manufactured by Asus). The device runs the latest Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) OS, is powered by Nvidia Tegra 3 quad-core Cortex A9 processor and comes with 1 GB RAM, and 8 to 16 GB NAND flash depending on the model.

Here are the specifications of the Google Nexus 7:

  • CPU – Nvidia Tegra 3 Quad core Cortex A9 @ 1.2 GHz
  • Memory – 1GB RAM
  • Storage – 8 or 16 GB Flash
  • Display – 7” 1280×800 HD IPS display (216 ppi)
  • Connectivity
    • WiFi 802.11 b/g/n
    • Bluetooth
  • Camera – 1.2MP front-facing camera
  • Sensors – Accelerometer, Magnetometer and Gyroscope
  • Misc – Microphone, speaker, NFC and GPS
  • Battery – 4325 mAh (Up to 8 hours of active use)
  • Weight – 340 grams
  • Size – 198.5 x 120 x 10.45mm

The device only has a power, vol-/+ buttons, an headphone jack and a micro USB port. No HDMI out, no microSD slot. MHL is not supported via the micro-USB port.

Slashgear has an hands-on video showcasing Android 4.1 running in Google Nexus 7.

Google Nexus 7 will ship mid-July in selected countries, but you can pre-order it for $199 (8 GB version) or $249 (16 GB version). The price is very attractive considering the features and processing power of this tablet, but that’s really a shame they did not include a microSD card slot.

You can get more information on Google Nexus 7 page or in the Google Play store. (You may have to use a proxy such as to access Google Play link if you live in a country where the device is not sold yet).

  1. Hi, could someone give a link to source of “No MHL out”. Galaxy Nexus also have only power, vol-/+ buttons, an headphone jack and a micro USB port. But Galaxy Nexus is able to send video (MHL) through microUSB.

I’m pretty sure it does not have a standard MHL port (which requires HDMI).
To be honest, I completely forgot it might be possible to support MHL via micro-USB when I wrote the article, but it finally appears that due to cost reasons MHL is not supported in the Nexus 7:

“THERE IS NO MHL. Despite all the documents you may find and read and discuss, I work at Google and there is absolutely no MHL. Costs too much (not just hardware, but license, encryption keys, etc).”

Thank you for the link. By the way, what is a standard MHL port? I thought that MHL is connection agnostic. But I didn’t check that because MHL specification is not officially available for free.

Sorry, my mistake… the MHL standard actually uses micro-USB on the device, and a micro-USB to HDMI cable is needed, I don’t know why I thought it would normally use a micro-HDMI to HDMI cable.

  5. I don’t remember exactly where did I saw that they (asus) unofficially mentioned that there is indeed video out available via micro usb port.
This was mentioned somewhere on topic relating to a company which is trying to standardized MHL and Wi-Fi Direct across all plateforms and devices.
And that article pointed out that it is even possible with microusb so why we need MHL or some sort of expensive port.

I don’t exactly remember it was theverge or engadget or google I / O where I heard or read this, I guess too much news effect. 🙂

on a side note (offtopic) : see this, I find it worth sharing 🙂
