Compared to previous generation processor like Snapdragon 845, the new Snapdragon 855 comes with 5G that supports up to 20 times higher sustained performance compared to 4G. The CPU delivers a 45% boost in performance, continuous 4K HDR capture is now possible thanks to a 30% improvement in energy efficiency, and Hexagon 690 DSP is twice as fast for vector operation.

Qualcomm Artificial Intelligence Engine which encompass the new CPU, GPU and Hexagon accelerator delivers 7 TOPS, or about 3 times higher performance compared to the previous generation. Adreno 640 is said to be the first GPU to handle true HDR gaming, and boosts graphics rendering performance by 20%.

The Snapdragon 855 Mobile Platform is already sampling to manufacturers, and the first devices should start selling in 1H 2019.

  1. If we assumed, for the sake of argument, that the CA76 in Kirin980 and SD855 were identical, and that in both SoCs all big cores could do their top clocks simultaneously, then the multi-threaded performance of the big cores alone would be in favor of the Kirin:

    $ echo “scale=4; 2.6 * 4 – (2.419 * 3 + 2.842)” | bc
    .301

  2. The level of integration is pretty impressive. It’s interesting that Qualcomms HW guys can get all of this stuff onto a chip and get yields that are viable yet their SW guys that write the drivers for it produce stuff that can only be described in expletives.

  3. The 845 was supposed to enable video capture of 4K@60fps.
    But most of the the smartphones that have the 845 SoC, can only shoot 4K@30fps.

    I guess that the 845 is capable of shooting 4K@60 for only a few minutes, and then the SoC gets too hot. That’s why some manufacturers have decided to skip on that feature completely.

    So I hope that the 855 does a better job and provides true 60fps.

    And it’s still not 4K@120fps like Samsung’s Exynos chips were able to shoot even two years ago (theoretically, because the devices didn’t actually let doing it, just in the sake of not giving Exynos users an advantage over Snapdragon users [of the same Samsung model]).
