Dune HD AV1 4K TV Box To Run AOSP or Android TV for Android 10 on RealTek RTD1319 Processor

4K TV boxes capable of playing AV1 content are coming later this year. Many of the entry-level models will feature Amlogic S905X4 processor, but some higher-end set-top boxes will instead be equipped with Broadcom BCM7218X or Realtek RTD1319 processor with better video post-processing capabilities and often more extensive DRM support which can be important to operators.

Dune HD AV1 4K TV box is coming later this year with Realtek RTD1319 media processor, and support for either Android 10 AOSP or Android TV for Android 10.

It will be a dual OS system as we reported for other recent Dune HD media players, namely Linux-based Dune HD OS will handle video playback, and run side-by-side with Android 10.0 either AOSP or Android TV depending on the customer choice.

Considering the options, and support for “remote monitoring and service management” Dune HD AV1 4K set-top box looks to target operators specifically, and it’s unclear whether a version will be sold directly to the general public.

There’s very little public information about RTD1319 (and RTD1311) SoC’s, apart from some commits to mainline Linux for the processors and PymParticle EVB, as well as 2019 video showing 4K AV1 video playback on a development board.

  1. I really find it hard to believe Google would allow the same box to be either AOSP or ATV, but we’ll see.

    1. If Dune has never applied for AndroidTV Certificates for devices beforehand, then they may fail on first attempt, best for them to announce a capable device to see if they can attract a Telecom Operator for further investment in their products

From Realtek for Telco Operators concerning new chipsets:
“Multiple System Operators (MSOs) need a highly secured, constantly upgradable open source platform in order to provide premium multimedia services delivery over Internet Protocol (IP) networks. Based on Google Android TV Operation System & RDK (Reference Design Kit managed by the RDK Management open source consortium), Realtek Semiconductor has delivered a series of UHD STB SOCs with multiple HDR standards, high-security Conditional Access, and advanced DRM technologies, thereby offering the most reliable multimedia STB solutions for MSOs. In addition, among the series, the RTD1319/RTD1311 are the world’s first STB SOCs embedded with a 4K AV1 video decoder. The two also support AVS2.0 video decoder, which is popular in the Chinese-speaking regions, making them the best candidates for both Western and Oriental MSOs.”

      1. I’m having a sagem box based on bcm.
Eith androidtv 6 with a patchlrvel of yeats ago. Perfect crap, no update at all…

    2. It’s not a consumer device. Dune HD will offer it to IPTV operators so they can choose their hardware and software configuration, and then sell it under their own brand.

      1. Interesting, thanks. Not sure they are the OEM, based on their website, some OTT box for operators look like they are coming from Videostrong (MeCool).
