Qualcomm QRB5165 system-on-module is made for robotics applications

Lantronix Open-Q 5165RB is a tiny System-on-Module (SoM) based on the same Qualcomm QRB5165 octa-core IoT processor we’ve just seen in Qualcomm Flight RB5 5G Platform high-end drone reference design.

The ultra-compact (50x29mm) module comes with 8GB LPDDR5, 128GB UFS flash, multiple MIPI camera and display ports, WiFi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1, and various I/Os.

If you wonder why you’d see Open-Q 865 SOM on the silkscreen of the module, that’s because Qualcomm QRB5165 must be pin-to-pin compatible with Snapdragon 865, but optimized for robotics, so the same PCB as the earlier Open-Q 865 SOM and Open-Q 865XR SOM (Snapdragon XR2) has been re-used.


Lantronix provides Ubuntu 18.04 with Linux 4.19 and ROS2 (Robot Operating System v2) support, with Gstreamer, Video4Linux (V4L2), Docker…, as well as the GCC and LLVM toolchains for development. Artificial Intelligence functions are supported through Qualcomm Neural Processing SDK, Computer Vision SDK, Neural Networks API, and TensorFlow Lite.

The company also provides a mini-ITX development kit with optional display and camera for evaluation and software development. It comes with headers and ports to leverage all functions of the modules. You can check the specifications of the Open-Q 865 mini carrier board for details.
