GL.inet GL-S10 – A compact BLE to MQTT IoT Gateway

GL.inet is better known for its WiFi routers, but the company’s latest model, the GL-S10, can not be used as a WiFi access point, and instead, the ESP32 powered device acts as a BLE to MQTT IoT gateway over Ethernet or WiFi.

The gateway will gather data from Bluetooth LE devices such as beacons, and be used in warehouses, shopping malls, airports, exhibition halls, tourist attractions, etc… for personnel management, asset management, environmental monitoring, indoor navigation, and more.

There’s no typical web interface in the device, and instead, you’d be asked to use GL-S10 Tool App for Android or iOS to configure the gateway’s settings including reporting intervals, MQTT servers, DHCP/Static IP,  OTA firmware upgrades, and more. Alternatively, the company lets you rebuild the firmware with your own default settings for WiFi and MQTT server, and whatever you’d like to change, which you’d then be able to flash accordingly.

GL-S10 board ESP32 BLE to MQTT gateway

GL.inet GL-S10 is sold for $24.99 with its external antenna, a USB power cable, and a user manual, but you can also add $5 to get a BLE beacon shipped with the gateway.

I’m a bit surprised that this supports PoE, as it would generally imply the presence of some large components not visible on the board. Probably lacks any form of isolation?

Here are some more pictures of the inside, showing more components

Picture above is not showing the PoE transformer which is on a separate board and appears identical to that used when ordering a GL-AR150 with PoE. It is also available separately at https://store.gl-inet.com/products/mini-poe-module.

Thanks both for the additional pictures, it makes a lot more sense that way. That makes it an interesting PoE ESP32 board which has probably a lot more applications than just BLE to MQTT…

This is cool can it be used as ble positioning tracking using multiple setup as anchors?
