Google OTT Turnkey Solution to Deliver Fast-to-Market Pre-Certified 4K HDR Dongles

Despite Google offering Android TV for an optimized big screen experience, many TV boxes are still running a heavily modified version of Android for smartphone, since it’s not that trivial for manufacturers and TV operators to get certification for Android TV.

Operators normally just want their own branded hardware with their own streaming app and/or launcher, and “Google OTT Turnkey” aims to help this section of the market by providing pre-certified OTT (Over-The-Top) hardware with low investment and a quick time to market.

Google OTT TurnkeyThe dongle/TV box will come with a voice remote control, include certified for Google services and Netflix, receive firmware from Google, while still allowing operators’ customization. The solution would allow a time to market of about 2 to 3 months.

We learned about Google OTT Turnkey in the first part of “the Android TV Workshop” at the Connected TV World Summit 2019. The solution is quickly mentioned at the 6:03 mark.

That’s not an awful lot of information, but Android TV Rumors‏ also points to  another video, and claims the model in the presentation is the Askey STI6130 with the following key features:

  • SoC – Quad core Arm Cortex-A53 CPU up to 1.5GHz (DVFS)
  • System Memory – 2GB DDR SDRAM
  • Storage – 8GB eMMC flash
  • Video Output – HDMI 2.0 up to 4K @ 60 Hz
  • Video Playback – H.265 up to 4K 60 fps, H.264 up to 4K 30 fps, MPEG-4/2/1 , WMV, RealVideo up to 1080p30
  • Connectivity – Dual band 2T2R WiFi 5 up to 867Mbps , Bluetooth 4.2
  • USB – 1x micro USB port
  • Power Supply – 100~240VAC  input, 5VDC/1A output
  • Dimensions – TBD. Wrong dimensions listed in specs…

The processor must be one of Amlogic S9XX processor, and since VP9 is not mentioned (I thought this was a requirement for YouTube certification…), it may be Amlogic S905L processor.

The box is said to be Android 8.0 compliant with support for STB client Middleware, but it’s unclear whether the software part is correct here, especially since Netflix certification is nowhere to be found.  I would assume Google OTT Turnkey solution to run the latest Android TV 9, and include Google & Netflix certifications.

Lol so OTT in the sense of “bypassing telecommunications, multichannel television, and broadcast television platforms that traditionally act as a controller or distributor”

This is interesting. Amlogic SoCs are becoming even more popular. This reminds me I am still waiting for my LeFrite with Amlogic S805X. The Kickstarter campaign has a huge delay of the shipping.
