Robustel R5020 Lite 5G router targets industrial applications

Robustel R5020 Lite is an industrial 5G router with 4G LTE Cat 18 fallback, two Gigabit Ethernet ports and WiFi 5 connectivity, as well as features such as an RS232 or RS485 serial port,  wide 12-36V DC power input, and support for an extended temperature range.

The company says the R5020 Lite is especially well suited for “Enterprise / SD-WAN applications as a ‘5G managed modem'”, and it can also be used as a backup for fixed line broadband, for primary broadband access, as well as for Industrial IoT (IIoT) applications like industrial automation, autonomous robots, and Smart Transportation applications.

Industrial 5G Router router application example

DIN rail mounting, desktop, or wall mounting options are offered for the router. It runs the company’s “RobustOS” operating system based on Debian 11 and said to provide a “simple, secure and lightweight operator interface”.  The OS supports a range of the usual network protocols, VPN tunneling, firewall functions, and management is possible through the web interface, a CLI program, or SMS, plus the serial port that can notably handle Modbus RTU to TCP.

Robustel also offers an SDK for customization, and support for an App Center with apps such as Data Guard, SNMP server/client, Captive Portal, and so on.  The router, or a fleet of routers, can be managed from the cloud with Robustel RCMS Cloud.

As one would have to expect, the Robustel R5020 5G Lite is a features-and-cost-down version of a larger industrial 5G router with more Ethernet ports, digital I/Os, and USB port, and more memory (256MB) available to the SDK.  More details about both routers can be found on the company’s website. The R5020 5G Lite happens to be the third 5G IoT router from the company as we previously covered the EG5120 industrial IoT gateway with a wider range of I/Os.

  1. For my home server usage, anyone knows if or when some cheap 5g wifi6 routers would be available?
Or 5g cards or usb-dongle to install in some sbc.

Maybe i should buy some used 5g phone +sbc +wifi6 usb dongle, and maybe could use usb-tethering to get internet to sbc.
Or thats almost as costly as a 5g router?
Maybe just a phone and a app for port forwarding to home-server.
Well, just dreaming and keep using slow wifi and slow-ish cellular internet for now.
