Infineon launches PSoC Edge Cortex-M55/M33 microcontrollers for enhanced AI and ML applications

Infineon’s new PSoC Edge series of microcontrollers integrates the Arm Cortex-M55 core with Helium DSP and the Ethos U55 NPU unit for advanced AI tasks. It also includes a power-efficient Arm Cortex-M33 core paired with an NNLite(DSP/NPU) for simpler AI tasks. This setup allows the device to be more efficient in varying load conditions.

Infineon’s PSoC lineup is a configurable microcontroller powered by Arm Cortex-M4, Cortex-M3, or Cortex-M0+ cores. The main USP (Unique Selling Point) of this lineup is its configurable digital and analog components. This feature makes them somewhat similar to an FPGA, but an FPGA is far more difficult to program than these microcontrollers and they are also very power-hungry.

The PSoC Edge microcontrollers integrate the Arm Cortex-M55 core with Helium DSP and the Ethos U55 NPU unit for advanced AI tasks. It also includes a power-efficient Arm Cortex-M33 core paired with an NNLite(DSP/NPU) for simpler AI tasks.

The device is equipped with advanced HMI and “Always-on” capability. “Always-on” is a feature of this device to constantly monitors and responds to signals automatically, making it suitable for smart homes, security, wearables, robotics, and many more.

Key Features of PSoC Edge Microcontrollers:

  • Built on Arm Cortex-M55 with Helium DSP.
  • AI/ML acceleration with Arm Ethos-U55 and Cortex-M33, plus Infineon’s NNLite.
  • Human-machine interaction enhancements and contextual awareness.
  • Safety and privacy features using Infineon Edge Protect technologies.
  • Continuous operation with “always-on” sensing.
  • Large on-chip memory including non-volatile RRAM, and external memory support.
  • Scalable and portable for complex systems.
  • Supports graphics, voice, audio, and vision-based applications.
  • Allows easy migration and upgrading within the PSoC Edge family.
  • Development supported by ModusToolbox software and Imagimob Studio AI solution.

To program the controller, Infineon recommends using the ModusToolbox since it has all the necessary development tools and libraries to get started with this controller. You can also use third-party IDEs like Microsoft’s VS Code, IAR’s Embedded Workbench, and Arm’s MDK with uVision IDE. For AI/ML development, Imagimob Studio and Service can be used. Imagimob helps in building and training AI/ML models which are then optimized for use on PSoC platforms.

Like other PSoC microcontrollers, the PSoC Edge series offers a long-term support commitment of 15 years, and in many cases, this support can extend beyond 20 years. The microcontroller is currently available for early-access customers. For more information, visit the product page. Additional details are available on the press release page.
