Intel Processor N100 mini PC with 8GB LPDDR5 memory sells for $156 and up

Topton is selling a mini PC based on the Intel Processor N100 Alder Lake-N quad-core processor with 8GB LPDDR5 RAM for $156.44 and up depending on the selected SSD capacity.

But despite its low price, the specifications are not too bad with dual 4K video output thanks to HDMI 2.0 and DisplayPort interfaces, two Gigabit Ethernet ports, WiFi 5 and Bluetooth 4.2 connectivity, four USB ports including one USB 3.0 port, and an audio jack.

Low-cost Intel Alder Lake N Mini PCThe Intel Processor N100 mini PC is offered with Windows 11 or Windows 10 for systems with an SSD, but Ubuntu is also listed. The package includes a power adapter, a SATA cable, a VESA bracket, and a user manual. I find it a little odd, or at least disappointing, that M.2 NVMe SSDs are not supported, and only M.2 SATA modules are. The specifications are amazingly close to the ones of the upcoming MSI Cubi N ADL mini PC that we covered last January, and whose specifications skip the type of M.2 SSD supported… Performance-wise, it should be slightly better than a system based on a Pentium Silver N6000 Jasper Lake SoC.

The cheapest model at $156.44 is barebone in the sense that it comes with 8GB LPDDR5, but no storage. For a complete system with a 64GB SSD, you’d need to spend $161.74 or only around $5 extra… You can select between Windows 11, Windows 10, or no operating system, but the price does not change, so we can safely assume Windows is not activated. The top model with 8GB RAM and 2TB SSD goes for $279.24.

Quite inexpensive. Better finished, probably faster and easier to work with than the vast majority of Arm-based devices in the same price tag these days.

How is the Linux support ?

it’s x86 with just basic stuff in it so I’m not worried at all, it’s not a rockchip-based device.

Base on this
https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/products/sku/231803/intel-processor-n100-6m-cache-up-to-3-40-ghz/specifications.html

Instruction Set Extensions
Intel® SSE4.1, Intel® SSE4.2, Intel® AVX2
that is nice.
So AVX is comming to low cost

My usual comment with regard to small form factor PCs —- having audio and all USB on the front leads to awkward cable routing and ultimately consumes as much space as a larger PC.

Yeah ideally you should have at least two USB on the rear and the minimum on the front (just what you need when connecting a thumb drive). Regarding jack I strongly prefer to have them on front than rear since usually it’s your headphone’s plug. But they might be better located at 45° in a corner.

They’re made for mounting on the vesa bracket on the back of the screen.

Great price but its beyond me why they couldn’t allocate just 4 of the 9 available PCIe lanes for NVMe on the M.2 slot

feels like strict market segmentation. This one feels more akin to the Dell Thin-Clients in specs I would not be surprised that in a few month a “Plus” version of this [nameless?] Box comes out with an Intel N97, which has a higher TDP, and then magically, more PCIe lanes will be routed to the m.2 socket. And hopefully more USB-3 ports.

This would be an instant purchase if it supports NVME M2 drives.
Lots of sale on NVME m2 drives but not SATA m2 drives.

On AliExpress I have seen plenty of cheap 2.5 SATA drives. Yes performance is probably not that great and who knows about reliability but I don’t count on this to be speedy anyway and cloud backup of important things is easy
